The fact that they have upped the limit to £100K will be a relief to some. This is not new, its the addition off paying for carers to come to the home that is. Watching politicians get hot under the collar on it, some of the Labour supporters on here its bullshit they have never cared about it for years. The wealthy or the so called wealthy they can afford it, then let them pay for care homes, death tax yeah right its been there for years and Labour have done bugger all when in power about it and will do bugger all if they gain power, its not the core vote. You get older you watch those that cared for you get older and then one day you find its changed , you are caring for them. You have to make choices and the one about care homes is the worse. Trust me dementia is a bloody awful disease you want to save your kids hours of agony tell them now whilst you can , what you want, agree with them what you want. The day it gets to me losing my dignity the kids have to wash me is the day I am in a home, and you know what if it eats into the kids inheritance on the house I don't care sure I would love to leave them something. However I dont though want them remembering me as the old codger that needed them to wipe his arse pissed himself and took there freedom away as they looked after me. Let me keep some dignity with my kids. They know it I have told them going through it with Mother in Law until she died this year I have told them again. The £100K yep love it...... |

So if you spend your entire life pissing up your money, gambling drinking etc etc when the time comes for retirement health care you pay nothing, as you have nothing! If however you've been careful, saved up your money, bought a house and generally scrimped and saved, then the good old government will take away anything over 100k...wow that sounds fair!! NOT!!

Is there currently a £70k cap or was that a proposal not yet brought in?

Yes currently there is a £70k proposal for a cap. It was due to be brought in 2020, I understand, There is also a current means test as well

There has never been a £70K cap it was promised in the Tory manifesto of 2015 but dropped. Its unlimited until your down to your last £23K oh.....then you contribute until you get to £14K.

You can see then how the new proposal would benefit those in terraces in Hartlepool who now get to pass on all their assets but this must surely be electorally damaging in middle class house price rise beneficiary areas? I cannot see it going I amended. Note, I haven't yet seen clarification over whether the £100k is per person. Edit, scrap that I just saw NHEs response.

I don't think that cap has been brought in, as it was a proposal for the future. It related to care/nursing costs (i.e. not room and board), but was a way to protect those who became long-term dependent.

Reading that link above, and something that hasn't been mentioned, is that we are going to have to pay interest on the deferred council loan that will be clawed back after death and the sale of your estate. Better not live too long, as it is costing.

I doubt it. Most pensioners vote Tory. They need them to live longer.

Well off pensioners won't need help from the state anyway

The govt had looked in to the care issue (and I think most us would agree that it needs to be planned for etc) and put forward its master plan only recently. That proposal has now been ditched overnight and something far worse proposed. Vince Cable said something similar on Newsnight. |

The issue is the addition of fees for care in the home. Edit The Labour promise in the manifesto is a review. "This will include consulting on options for sustainable funding to ensure funding is fair in its impact upon different generations, as well as between people with varying levels of wealth". Care home fees are around £700-800 a week there are not many pensioners getting that in pension payments.

I don't know the numbers, but did you read my post about my well off Tory friends? They hired a 24/7 nurse and had their own detached annexe for "mother's" care. An external care home was not even involved, aand she was definitely not paid £700/800 quid a week.
