Leo Messi

A couple of weeks ago I happened to watch a bit of Barcelona vs Albacete and was hugely impressed by Messi who came on as a sub for Barca. The 17 year old Argentine came off the bench and scored twice (one disallowed) in the space of just a few minutes, his goal was an expert lob from Ronaldinho's fine pass. Apparently he was brought over by Barcelona at the age of 14 and from what I saw he could finally be the one to justify the much over-used 'next maradona' title. Did anyone else see the match or know anything about him?

I saw that game as well. To finish both chances the way he did shows the potential really, at such a young age and in the nou camp in front of so many people.

The disallowed goal was an even better finish too!!

Doesn't sound like a very tidy finisher.

(Last time I did a lame pun on a foreign player's name, Shawky the Egyptian guy, the 3rd World War broke out on here shortly afterwards).

Can't see it happening with this thread.

I went to that game, he really caught the eye both me and my mate were asking about him during and after the game, at one point he was bombing it down the right then stopped and cut inside on his left, I don´t think I have ever seen anyone stop and change direction quicker.

This comes from the FIFA website in the profile of the Argentina team for the forthcoming World Youth Championships in Holland this June.

Star Player
“He’s our jewel,” says FC Barcelona President Joan Laporta about Lionel Messi, a precocious talent who has been hailed as the future of Argentine football. The left-sided midfielder moved to Spain along with his family at the age of 12 and has spent the last five years working his way through Barcelona’s youth teams.

Blessed with pace, prowess and a powerful shot, Messi became the youngest player ever to line out for the Catalan side’s first team, even coming on for a few minutes during a UEFA Champions League game. He also filled the role of playmaker for the Argentina youth side at the recent South American Championship, where he finished top scorer with seven goals. His achievements are all the more impressive when you consider he is still only 17 and the youngest member of the national squad. Unsurprisingly, his huge potential has created a wave of expectation among fans at the Camp Nou, who would love to see him regularly tormenting defences in La Liga in the run up to the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany ™.

Credit to Joan LaPorta maybe?
edit: stupid comment.

I agree Lionel Messi is really good. He has played well in the Champions League and has set up a few good goals recently. Plus he was the star at the World Youth Championship

Never saw this thread at the time it was started, but at half time in last night's Barca game on Sky, I was texting everyone that I'd seen football's next superstar. Messi was absolutely outstanding & I can't wait 'til Barca are on the box again. Or failing that, 'til Roman writes out another large cheque!!

It would be lovely to see him eliminate Chelsea from the Champions' League, for example.

Yeah, Messi is quality. Very quick feet.
France + Marseille also have got a quality 17 year old called Samir Nasri. Great seeing the next generation of superstars rolling through.
=)

Also has meant Barca have mored away from 4-5-1 so they can play Messi and E'to up front! Would hate to have to defend against those two!

Great player, but got sent off less than a minute after coming on as sub for his Argentina debut.

Alavés have reported Barcelona to the league for playing an ineligible player (Messi) in the games against Osasuna and Zaragoza and have asked that his licence be revoked for the rest of the season.

They did the same to Celta last season and cost us the title.

gab marcotti was talking about messi on talk sport on sundday night. Apparently the argie coach has said that even if he doesn't play again for barc this season, he will be in his world cup team. The pundits were saying similar stuff to what is on here...next maradona etc

Alavés' legal advisor Javier Tebas also happens to be the vice-president of the LFP (Spanish League governing body).

He is arguing that Messi's licence is invalid because when he was registered as a player with Barcelona B it was done using a regulation (168) that had actually been repealed. Barcelona claim that they have a letter from the secretary general of of the RFEF (Spanish FA) that states that article 168 was still in force. Tebas claims that the secretary general didn't have the authority to issue such a letter.

Prior to this on October the 4th Alavés had already claimed that Messi's registration was invalid. The reason they put forward on that ocassion was that Messi was registered as a youth player and that when he obtained Spanish naturalization on the 26th of September that kind of licence would have been revoked. This was thrown out by the authorities so he is trying a different tack.

Independiente have moved to quash rumours linking Chelsea with a move for highly-rated striker Sergio Aguero.

Reports in Buenos Aires claim that the Premiership outfit are preparing a €20 million (£13.5 million) raid for the 17-year-old, although club secretary Cristian Mattera says that he is unaware of any interest from Stamford Bridge.

"We haven't received any offer, it's not true. No one has sent or asked us anything about Aguero," he declared.

Independiente president Julio Comparada added: "We don't want to sell Aguero and we don't even want to put a price on him until we see which is the real interest of the transfer market."

Should Chelsea try to lure Aguero to West London they will face competition from Internazionale, who are also reportedly keen on the prodigy.
Sounds Interesting!
