TBF. He only needed to do exactly that. Argentina were probably dead and buried without his impact yesterday. He alone dragged them up with their bootstraps into qualifying.

They scored three goals, or more importantly Messi did. And if you check the goals they were individual brilliance, sod all to do with the team.

Both amazing players. Personally I've always enjoyed watching Ronaldo more than Messi, I just think he is more dynamic. But not much between them, we are lucky to get to watch 2 players of that ilk at the same time.

The South American qualifying group is a touch more difficult than taking on the likes of Andorra or the Faroe Islands or whatever. Even the lesser teams are either decent or play on top of some mountain.

On reflection, not so tough when Messi is playing against a defender who is either inept or corrupt TBF.

Messi hasn't tested himself in the PL and hasn't won a major trophy with Argentina, who are arguably alot better than Portugal.

Argentina have more quality on paper but the likes of Aguero, Higuain, world class players at club level, consistently underperform. Bedsides, Ronaldo was good at the Euros but not a standout star, merely a part of a well oiled Portuguese unit, and throughout the tournament Nani was more a more consistent performer. NANI. Compare that to Messi at the last World Cup, who although probably didn't deserve the golden ball, was Argentina's standout star .

Why would he move to a second rate league to 'test himself'? That makes no sense.

I personally think that Ronaldo is slightly better but they're both wonderful players.

Because the PL is the be all & end all? Such a dated & bullshit argument. As if the definition of greatness is based upon whether you can outfox Ryan f*cking Shawcross.

Yes. Ronaldo is a tax fiddling sulky c-unit.

The ultimate test would be to come to a club who haven't scored a goal yet and show his class there.

I have seen quite a lot of Portugal over the last few years due to them always being in Denmarks group and having some Portugese football friends. They have been utter dross many times the last few years and without Ronaldo wouldn't have qualified for any finals, including the one they won.

Suppose it's just a disagreement over what entails a mediocre team, that's the word I'd use to describe a team like Scotland or Ireland. It's only natural that they'd be very reliant on Ronaldo since their weakest position over the past decade as far as I can see is centre forward, so a lack of a goal scorer besides Ronaldo. Meaning their attack revolves around giving him the ball around the box and hoping he scores, which he usually does. However, their defense and midfield is good or at least above average. I maintain that the only European teams genuinely better than them are France, Italy, Germany, Spain and Holland if we're going back a few years.

They're both flogs.
They're both football geniuses.
Ones a tax evading tosser.
Ones the biggest sook going around.
They're both greedy bastards in front of goal.
They're both brilliant at putting the ball in the net.
I'm more a Messi fan because of his willingness to play in a team environment a little more than Ronaldo.
Be pretty handy in the same team though. They'd be 6-0 up with a hattrick apiece and still wouldn't be satisfied.

Messi is just an amazing, completely one-off natural. Ronaldo wasn't that good at utd, for a couple of years. Messi hit the ground running.

Interesting stat. Barca have been at the nou camp since 1957. But Messi is single handedly responsible for scoring or assisting 10% of the goals Barca have scored there. Incredible. He did it on his debut, and he's still doing it now. And none of that is to take anything from Ronaldo, who has worked to become as great as he has.
