My parents and brother went to see them but I was at Download festival. I kinda wish I saw them but I think I had more fun than I would have done had I been at Thetford.

But there again I thought that the ideal dinner was half a pound of cola cubes, which sums up their music as it happens. Their best achievement by far was "It Must Be Love" and that was a Labi Siffre cover........

Total VVankers.
Harsh.

Madness are up there with Ray Davies, Ian Dury and arguably the Beatles and the Who as eccentric British pop songwriters in the best music hall traditions. You could add Blur and Oasis to that list. Three minutes of escapism. All their early material was catchy and part of a unique sound.

To compare them to Dick Van Dyke is really shallow, and if the best you can come up with to knock them is to look at their football allegience then your case is pretty poor.

"It Must Be Love" their best achievement? That's very subjective. House of Fun was their only number one as I recall. Let's be honest - when they wrote and performed most of their best material they were very young men, how many young bands around since then have achieved what Madness achieved? All the boy band material is written (and performed??) by the likes of the bloke from Mud "who looked like a bird" (his words not mine). Oasis, Blur, Radiohead are all older.

You've knocked their skinhead following. So what? Same thing happens at football.

Yes there is more cerebral music out there. But if you're after intelligent music, go classical.

I see em at london arena a few years ago, had a brilliant night, as did all my mates.

Best part of the night (after quite a few hours drinking) was my mate getting hold of some bird dressed as a schoolgirl. she had two other mates with her, dressed as schoolgirls as well.

When he got the pictures developed later in the week, it looks like they were actually schoolgirls (didnt look older than 15, he was 22 at the time!)

You must be suffering from Madness yourself "Up there with Ray Davies, Ian Dury, The Beatles and the Who" I don't know where to begin on that one, except to say that perhaps,......no, you really must be kidding.

Well perhaps the Van Dyke thing was a bit flipant. There is nothing wrong with mockney crap if it is carried off well, you know, if there is something engaging behind it like decent songs or humour. Parklife is a case in point, but Madness... As for football allegances, it's true, I am always extremely condescending about Chelsea supporters, particularly when they come from as far away from SW6 as Hastings.

Yes, subjectively true.

House of Fun was their only number one as I recall.
Right..... and a right poor offering it was too.

Yes. Lots of skinheads follow West Ham.

Not intelligent, just engaging.

A great band to see live! I sang and danced to all the songs both times I have seen them! Their greatest hits video/dvd/cd is top notch

I recomend buying One Step Beyond! What a great listen!

You have got to remember the band are all North Londoners, and don't have much sense when it comes to picking football teams Regardless of their background, they are, and will be the best!

Is Suggs the most boring bloke on earth?

He hosts a show on Virgin Radio on Friday and Saturday night, Virgin Party Classics or sunnink. The music's great, but his 'wacky' manner is just too irritating. I think he thinks he's funny.

He's not.

He makes Jimmy Saville sound good.

Sorry to bring up an old thread but I've been listening to alot of Madness for the first time since I was about 10...Forgot how amazing this band is. I'm only 21 and it shows you can enjoy this band at any age.

Music of my childhood.

Definitely among the greats.

Loved the band at the time and throughout my life have never gone a few months without sticking on an album. Sat down this morning and just went through most of their videos back to back. The more time goes on the more unique and special they seem to become.

Despite looking like just goofing off and having a big laugh, those videos are just classics - almost like The Goons or Marx Brothers but these guys could write and deliver a song too. They were young men at the time and yet there is no pretence or ego about their behaviour at all. Just come across as very honest North London lads. Looking at the pretentious and affected direction bands have gone these days - generally right up their arseholes, you can't help wondering where it all went wrong?

Saw them at Brockwell Park 1983 or 94 they were brilliant. Also saw the Suggs solo tour a few years back, was very entertaining and some funny stories
