Glentoran V Shelbourne
Glentoran have been drawn against Shelbourne, in the first qualifying round of the 'Champions' League.
Always had a soft spot for Shelbourne due to family connections, and would love to be over for the tie next month, but that looks doubtful. May be able to make the second round away match if they progress, against some team called Steaua Bucharest ![]()

Isnt there some sort of polictal rivalry to this game?

Plenty of rivalry - but not religious political.
If it had been Linfield, rather than Glentoran, thats another story. Particularly as the 12th July marches almost coincides with the match in Belfast.

Bit unfair really. Linfield are the one club out of the so-called "Blues Brothers" (Themselves-Rangers-Chelsea) to make a real effort to eradicate bigotry amongst their support and at their club. One of their first acts after the Neil Lennon thing was to sign a high-profile, for the IFA, Catholic. Also, they were feature in all the Irish papers this season after letting one of Ulster's GAA female teams (Armagh?) train at their ground this season; something that would have been unthinkable a few years ago.

I am more concerned about Longford Vs Camarthen
Also didn't Shels lose to Glentoran in the Setanta Cup? |

Was speaking to my mate who is a Shels fan, he honestly reckons there will be more police/garda than away fans. I went over last week for Shels v Shamrock Rovers, there was no shortage of crowd trouble and a pitch invasion, and these 2 are catholic teams!!!
The game at Glentoran is on 13th July!!!!!!!!! Now that will be fun, there could hardly have been a more confrontational time or game, well maybe Sham Rovers v Linfield. I'm going to try and get to one of them, I like a good atmosphere.

More correctly they are 2 Dublin teams - most of who's fans are likely to be Catholic. It was a local Derby. |

I know it was a derby, as I put in another thread. My point being that a clash between a team from the North and one from the South in Marching season week will have more animosity to it than the game last week, and at that game there was crowd trouble. Therefore there will be alot more trouble in this.

I know you realise it is a Derby. They are not "Catholic" teams though, as you posted earlier. They are Dublin teams - although most of their support will be at least nominally Catholic, football teams in most of Ireland do not have a confessional nature - even that power house of North Dublin football - St Kevins. The exception is some rugby teams are "old boys" teams & senior schools are in the main confessional. Why am I bothering posting this? Just to make it clear that Sectarianism is not a major issue in most of Ireland. |

Whoever gets through faces Trabzonspor in the next round. What are their chances of getting past them ? Very little I would imagine. Wasn't it Shelbourne who took on Depo Coruna last time and gave them a good run for their money ?

My points are not for your benefit, as your posts show a pretty detailed knowledge, but for those with far less knowledge. We get enough visitors on this site trying to sow false dissension amongst us Palace. |

Phew, thought I was going to have a very tricky tie to get to there. Bucharest is a lot easier, and appparently a jolly place.

Agree with this plus the area around the glens ground is as protestant as shankhill imo. Remember palace fans who travelled up from the south for last seasons friendlies had to park in town as they wanted a car to go back to. |

Just behind Tolka Park (Shel's Ground) is St Luke's the constituency office of An Taoiseach - so always a Special Branch presence.

I've come over for the first leg against Steaua. Shelbourne may not be in contention for the second! My cousin works at the club, though he was tapped up for all the freebies.
A sell out tonight of about 8K i'm told. It was only £10 for a ticket so not surprising - I had to pay a bit more as it was last minute. Here's to a good evening, on and off the pitch. |

Won't be easy tonight for the Shels. We are a very good team, made it to the last 16 of Uefa cup last season, after beating sides like CSKA Sofia, Besiktas, Standard Liege and Valencia. We got a new manager, Protasov, who the irish would not like pretty much
We didn't make and big transfers this summer, but the new manager gave a new style to the team, resulting in winning all the friendly games we had this summer, 5. We are not what we used to be during 1986 -1989... but we are still a hard nut to crack. Bucharest is a very nice place, friendly. You wont have no trouble there.. If you are interested in a few beers before the match i reccomend you the Irish Pub, located in Piatza Unirii.http://www.irishpubs.ro/index.html Hope Steaua puts a good display today, i want a victory.. and an even bigger one on Ghencea in the return league. And of course an easy team in the third round. I dont know whether to be optimistic, but i think we got what it takes to knock Shelbourne out. I wont be watching the match as i'll be in the Holmesdales cheering the boys. ps. 4000 Romanians expected at Tolka Park tonight ? thats what the romanian press said. True or not ? Forza Steaua!!

Dull 0-0, which to be honest Shel played for. Steaua were at half-pace most of the time. Not sure whether Shel can up their game to score a goal. Cant make away leg, but I will make Bucharest one day. And no, not 4,000 romanians there Maybe 40. There were more in the city centre. |
