Intersting post and as always there are different opinions IMHO players like Berry, Borrowdale, Danze, Ryan Hall and Mark Hudson are good enough for an average championship squad but not for the potential champions. We need to continue trading up like we are with the likes of Ward, McAnuff and Macken until we have 20 top class championship palyers that any of our rivals would want. The emphasis has to be to get out the division and then worry about premier when we get there.

SilkkWilliems is playing for a contract
Diamondeagle

With a year in the ccc Hall, Borrowdale and hudson will be able to adjust to premieship. Danze is a weird one though i have seen him play exellent and cack. I think we should leave it at 1 left mid, then let the staff do there job!!

We need to be realistic. We have a squad of players that showed Championship winning form in the first months under Dowie, and have subsequently grown in ability and numbers during our season in the Premiership. We invested heavily in players like Sorondo, Ventola and Kaviedes who we wisely only signed on loan expecting relegation.

If we don't sign another player, despite our parachute payment, I would expect this season to be a season in which we lose money as a company.

We have lost Routledge, which was a blow, but replaced him with McAnuff who I think will do a good job.

We have lost Shipperley (paid him off), and replaced him with Macken, which I think represents an improvement.

We have lost Powell, and replaced him with Ward, which I hope represents an improvement.

The rest of the squad remains, and we have young players pushing hard for places. We should hope to hit the ground running, and be aiming for an automatic return at the first attempt. More players would be nice, but we should avoid doing a Goldberk, and put our faith in our existing team to do the business again.

As has been said on many threads, it's all down to AJ. If he goes the budget changes and the main need is for a poacher and so until this is settled I can't see us buying again unless it's an obvious neede.g we get left with the hapless Pepperoni as our only goalie.

There are some decent players about like Edwards, Boyd and the bloke at bristol but with the strikers we have currently why would we need them? Sad thing is, like when Wright left if we get a pot full of sudden money then the price fir these people will inflate.

Antbody notice that despite going up late like we did the hamsters have learnt from our lessons and got in 3 decent defenders veruy quickly

2 of them were the centre back partnership of a side that were almost playing in League 1.

Gabbidon may be good but Collins is a young prospect only, Konchesky hasn't really pushed on from where he was a couple of seasons ago - will pardew get him imporving.

Would not say they are decent, they are ok i guess!

Good news, we do still need another one or two new faces.

By the way, I see that you haven't posted for a few days, I hope you weren't caught up in yesterday's events.

Padavano and Akinbiyi coming back? Oh, my god!!

There have always been two ways to approach promotion to the Premiership - throw money at it and hope / save the money and hope. West Ham are taking the first option. In any case I'd put Hall and Boyce at least equal to Gabbidon and Konchesky, and probably match Collins with Hudson, so they've probably done no better than we did and they've spent more.

AJ may equal 4 Championship quality players, but what do 4 Championship quality player equal when we get back to the Premeirship? Deadwood - and a drain on the resources we may need to replace the player we had a few months before. We would return with a worse squad than we left the Premiership with - is that "moving forward"?

Totally agree. So many people are saying we need a team for the championship and yes we do. but if/when we get promoted, then what? If we dont have any decent PREMIERSHIP players then we will just go back down.
I know its hard to hang on to/buy these sorts, but we must do our best. AJ is our best player and even if hes unhappy we should keep him imo (unless a ridiculous bid of 15 mil plus comes in). He has a good attitude and if we get promoted im sure he will stay to score the goals that will keep us up
