My home town club
A new season is with us and yet again I'd like to bore you with news and comments on my home town club VfB Lübeck.
VfB Lübeck compete in the Regionalliga Nord (3. Bundesliga North, in fact). After missing out on promotion for the last 3 seasons (finishing just one place behind the promoted teams!) I'm full of hope that this time VfB will get it right. BTW: VfB Lübeck haven't achieved anything in their history. Apart from two seasons in the 2. Bundesliga (1995-97) they have been restricted to regional or local football. SC Fortuna Köln 0, VfB Lübeck 1. A free header in 89. minutes secured this very vital win. This is how the ground looks like: http://www.stadionwelt-stadien.de/St...uebeck%20.html |

This is my home town team. Ware FC.
This is the "main" stand, really its the only stand. They moved here in 1995 after Glaxo Wellcome (The main employer in the town) wanted the area the old stadium was built on, so they offered to build Ware FC a new ground, if they got the old area. Cost them £1.2m. ![]() Here is the old stadium: First played here in 1926, and the last game was against Hungerford Town. The Club was founded in 1892 and although first called Ware Town soon changed it's name to plain Ware FC. Currently Ware play in the Ryman League Division 3, so it's pretty low down. But they have just started their friendly games. A 1-0 win over Wisbech Town.

This thread is intended as my annual VfB Lübeck ego-trip:
Of the 14 VfB players used at SC Fortuna Köln (Cologne) 3 were from Turkey, 2 from Zimbabwe, 1 Czech and one player from Lithuania. Not bad for a team playing semi-pro football at 3. level in the german league pyramid. more info at http://www.vfb-luebeck.de but don't forget this little - or you might end up having a crystalpalace.com experience. ![]() |

"Bayer Leverkusen A" is the amateur side - it is common for 1. and 2. Bundesliga sides to have amateur sides lounging around in the lower divisions. They even occasionally make it to German cup finals (correct me if I am wrong Ruedi). |

You are absolutely right. Newly promoted Bayer Leverkusen A (pipping Neil the Eagle's Wuppertaler SV on goal difference) are in fact fielding an U21 side. All players are on pro-contracts but have yet to make it into the 1. team. Werder Bremen are using "amateur"-players - hopeful young players from lower league clubs who train with the full-pro squad. A-teams can compete in the German Cup (but no longer be drawn against their own 1. team - happend too often in recent years). But A-teams are not eligible to win promotion to the fully professional 1. and 2. Bundesliga. |

VfB Lübecks next match is at home to SC Paderborn 07 (Saturday, 2pm local time)
This is a match I've been waiting for nearly 25 years. Simply because of my own little bit of bigotry. My wife is from Paderborn and her parents still live down there in a small village on the outskirts of this Roman Catholic stronghold. To describe people from this part of Eastern Westfalia as conservative or traditional is using an euphemism. ![]() So, come on you boys in green and white - give them a right royal beating. |

VfB Lübeck 3 (1)
SC Paderborn 2 (1) att. 4.300 This match had everything: it started in bright sunshine but had to be stopped for 15. mins because of heavy rain, wind and lightning. After a 15 mins break VfB were caught flat out (0-1) but got back on level terms having put Paderborn under pressure (for nearly 90% of the match). Chances galore after that but Paderborn struck yet again (71.) when the VfB defence fell asleep. But what a comeback: Ibi Türkmen scored twice (75. / 78. min). A Paderborn player was sent off in 85. mins and even their goalie came out in a late effort to score an equaliser .... ![]() Ibi Türkmen Last edited by ruediger : 06-08-2001 at 05:02 PM. |
