afc wimbledon/fc manchester
Is it just me but while I hear the fans of these new clubs claiming that its great to be at grass roots level football.this is how football should be, have they lost sight of the fact that because a bigger fan base has been created by disillusioned fans of wombles/manu that they have already become bigger than the local teams that they play against. Therefore creating the bigger business football clubs that Glazier and Winkleman bought into.

spot on
the only reason afcw went a record 74 league games unbeaten (or whatever it was) is because they are basically the "Chelsea" of the Non-league, buying all the best players available I think the non-league Man Utd is more bizarre - the basic argument seems to be "How dare this multi-millionaire buy control of our football club" (albeit putting the club into debt to turn it private from a PLC) - surely Man Utd have been nothing but a business for years anyway - can't see much of a difference myself.

I initially liked the AFC Wimbledon idea but am so tired of hearing their fans gloating about being "big time Charlies" and how, in a couple of years they will be playing Franchise FC. However, all that they are achieving is to bring the Chelsea scenario to the non-league. I am so pleased that they are having a more difficult time in the Ryman's this year. Whether they will battle through with the current squad or throw some more money at it will be interesting to see.
You only have to see how many non-league clubs are suddenly feeling the need to go full time if they are to compete, to realise the forthcoming crisis. Crawley are one example. I try to go there when I can, and would love to see them as a league club. However, it's £13 for a seat there this year which is ridiculous for non-league football. They are also revamping their clubhouse. It was a great pre-game meeting place with cheap beers but is being targeted for corporate entertainment now.

Exactley, AFC Wimbledon was formed as a last resort by Wimbledon fans after they had their club effectively taken from them. FC United on the other hand is typical of the prissy, attention seeking, self obssessed behaviour which an element Man Utd fans continiously exibit. So their club was taken over by an owner they didn't apporve of...god of we all formed new clubs for reasons like that noone would be left supporting teams in the Coca Cola leagues...we'd all be following new clubs in the Unibond league or whereever.

Don't forget that Wimbledon WERE a non-league club for nearly 90 years (1889-1977) and actually yo-yo'd between the old Division 3 & 4 in their first few years as a League Club.
Part of the charm (!?) of the old Wimbledon/Crazy Gang set up was that they operated very much like a non-league outfit whilst in the old First Division/Premier League between 1986 to 2000, sticking two fingers up at the stuffy attitude of the "big clubs" and regularly outperforming clubs on a hugely superior budget with often 10 times Wimbledon's support. That being said, Wimbledon were always quite a big club in non-league circles before 1977 and their chairman in the 60's Sydney Black was a milionaire even then. It should also be noted that Wimbledon simply would not have not gained admission into the Football League in 1977 without the campaigning of a certain RON NOADES! In those days, clubs had to be elected (voted) into the League and Noadesy pulled out all the stops to pip Altrincham (who were a very succesful northern club) and Workington who got voted out of the League by just a couple of clubs. I can't stand the buggers!

AFC Wimbledon will find it harder. They may well go up this season, but the standard rapidly improves. They remind me of Aldershot Town, who entered the Isthmian League Div 3 playing at clubs with about 50 regulars, taking 500 minimum to every away game. They walked it for 2 or 3 years before slowing up somewhat. Their support is no bigger now than it was back then.

The AFC Wimbledon fans I know are enjoying the increased standard of the competition and have their feet on the ground with regard to how tough it is going to be. If Palace moved to Leighton Buzzard and called themselves the LB Eagles I know what I wouldn't do...

fc united have already flexed their financial muscle by going directly onto level 2 of the football league pyramid, thereby jumping above more established clubs.

Most of you are missing at least part of the reason why FCUM were set up (and this is from friends who've made the move from MU to FC) - it's not just a prissy rant against an American takeover, it's also a protest against the corporisation and sterilisation of their football "experience". They'd rather go to a small game with 2-3000 crowds, where fans applaud each other teams/go to actually watch football/see players who aren't just there to pick up a whanging great pay packet than go to a sterile prepackaged match event that costs a bomb and is as much geared towards corporate jollies as it is the fans. I'll give you the point about jumping up the league without earning it mind, but if they start too low wouldn't they be an even bigger fish in an even smaller pond?

Funny how none of them felt the need to do this while all the corporate money was going towards buying players and trophies at regular intervals.

Wouldn't worry, all these FCUM supporters will start going back to watching Manc on Sky when their "crusade" doesn't win anything in its first season.

But Man Utd as a club have been at the forefront of the corporate branding of football for years nown and there fans have happily cheered every cup and title. This has been the case ever since they became a PLC years back. What's really changed?

I've seen afc play once this season - a 1-1 draw v Bromley. They have a couple of good strikers including the current NZ centre forward, but the defence was all over the place and they lack width. They've just re-signed that Harvey bloke from So Solid Crew who is a good a full-back but i reckon they need a couple of signings if they are to go up automatically
