Thanks Dave ch. I thought I recognised Paine but thought he had finished by then. Also was Bell Scottish?

That was David Payne's last season, one of a few to last the full 4 years in Div 1.

Bobby Bell was English - we got him from Blackburn iirc. A hard-man centre-half, he made his debut in the same 1-0 win v Everton as Don Rogers a few games earlier.

Rogers 'doing a Pele' the only difference being Rogers scored from it.

Along with the Burnley 52,000 crowd, probably the best game seen at Selhurst - great team and the whole crowd would get behind the team - if only we could see how that team would do today.

I wonder..... This Saturday would have been my Dad's 87th birthday if he hadn't had died 41 years ago. A repeat of that score would be brilliant.

Oh such wonderful memories of a game and a totally unexpected result, possibly one never ever to be repeated, especially against such formidable opposition.

I was there as a 12-yr-old believing my team was the best ever. That day we were just fantastic. Think I had my long knitted scarf that day, was a bit cold but we soon warmed up once the goals started going in!

Don Rogers was an amazing player. I reckon he could beat 11 players in a lift/elevator (for our U.S. Friends but he didn't just beat them his delivery after that was superb too. Clever player and one of those that could beat defenders at walking pace.

Davech can you remind me of Phillip? Was this Iain Phillip, big guy from Dundee?

Sir Don had everything Beckham hadnt .... pace, (very quick), unbelievable skill, the ability to beat defenders, cross ... my first sporting hero.

Was only the fact that england at the time didn't use wingers stopped him getting a shedfull of caps.

Georgie Best wasn't playing that day, neither was Bobby Charlton and the Lawman was a sub. Nevertheless, the record books will forever show that Crystal Palace beat them 5-0.

Easily makes the top 5 results in Palace's entire history.

True.

But they WERE relegated the following year

A Denis Law back-heel over the line (playing for Man City!!) confirmed it, iirc, although he apparently had the good(?) grace not to celebrate

Rogers was as good as you say. He was the best in England but, as John Jackson had already discovered, Sir Alf had no interest in players from an unfashionable south London club. And he also had no interest in flair players. He wanted runners !

When we thrashed Utd Bobby Bell had been with us for over a year. Never regarded him as a hard man. Not in the mold of the Roy Barry's or Girder Hynd's

Yes John, my bad. It was just his first game of the season. But he definitely had a reputation as a bit of a bad boy, I thought. But then again, my brain could well a bit addled
