Anyone who could miss a game because he hurt his neck washing his hair BEFORE a game can not be classified a hard man.

I remember that game so well. Palace could have had ten that day. about 3 minutes in look at the physio who runs to the dug out and grabs his pipe.

Just watched the highlights on eagles and I think Kidd must have been a late change because Bobby Charlton wasn't on the pitch. The others were I reckon and Law came on for Dunne.

It was really interesting to watch again and took me right back.

The skill and pace of Rogers was always amazing and great to see it on there. The team we were up against was not rubbish and had a lot of stars and yet we could have had 10 without too much argument.

Some obvious differences:

Phillip got proper mullered by Stepney in the area and just shrugged him off. Nowadays we would have had a triple salchow, a booking for Stepney at least and a pen and 20 people around the ref as he decided that.

Setup at corners. No pushing or shoving and TBH not that much marking and not that many people in the box even. Strange to watch.

Shape - not so sure it's the shape that's as wildly different as it looks at first glance it's more that back then it was so stretched out. Today it's so compressed and crowded because they all move as a unit (hopefully).

Tackling was very different but looked genuine. I think the game today is littered with diving and far more deliberately damaging contacts. The holding, pulling and shoving that is in the game now is crazy. In fact cheating was legitimised at some point as being professional which was the beginning of the end unfortunately.

What I did like the look of was the way the front 3 were all looking to get into scoring positions and.or running into the channels. YB does look to carry the ball into danger areas and makes runs but TBH can't finish. I think Wilf could be encouraged to make more runs into the channels and certainly to get across the box. I also want him to use his pace as Rogers did - mix it up. Nice to see him run at the centre of the defence with pace at Man City.

Anyway - no one expects us to win 5-0 on saturday but neither did they back then. Place your bets ladies and gentlemen

I was at the 5-0 mullering as a 7 year old. Came out of the ground believing we were the greatest team in the world. It was always exciting if you saw either an LWT or BBC lorry in the car park before the game cos you knew Palace would be on the telly that weekend.
And someone correct me if I'm wrong but I'm sure we hammered Sheffield Utd 5-1 that season too.

I remember the game well because I couldn't go. My wife and I's friends chose that of all days to get married. Just about everybody at the ceremony was a Palace supporter though we nearly all played at some level or other, and probably wouldn't have made it to the match anyway. As we were driving past the ground on the way from the church in Beddington to the reception at the Stanley Halls, Palace obviously scored as there was a deafening roar from the c. 40,000 crowd.
Without wishing to bore anyone even more another of our friends got married on the day we won 2-0 at Millwall in late 1968 in our promotion season. He though had it properly arranged and we went to the wedding ceremony in Croydon at mid-day. Then about 20 of us went by train to the Den in our best suits, and dresses, with carnations etc and stood on the terrace in a non-segregated crowd. These were the days when Millwall really were our bitterest rivals. Mark Lazarus scored to abuse from the crowd which today would probably result in sanctions of some sort, and which I could not put in writing. Mind you his reaction would today probably result in a lengthy ban. Anyway after a very satisfactory win we returned to join the wedding reception at the Croydon Suite and enjoyed a lovely meal and a drink or 2(!) to round off a fantastic day.

Stumbled upon this yesterday, Don Rogers watching the famous Palace match in question.
at around 19:10. Actually the whole clip was a treat to see, with him talking about his Wembley success with Swindon.

Wonderful to watch. Got his autograph more than any other player for Palace. Loved the way he never got dirty.

What a player and what a modest man. I can remember his debut vs Everton and the Man U hammering as if it were yesterday. He’d still make my all time 11
