Alexi Lalas
With our current fascination for Americans and Australians why don't we just go the whole hog and sign the most comical beardy weirdy wonder of all?

He lives in California, although I do believe there is some kind of rural/agricultural connection to what he's doing now. Last reported to be signing for the LA Galaxy in order to compete in the World Club Championship. Am I right in saying this has now been cancelled though?

After a 1-year hiatus in which spent time in the broadcast booth and playing with his band, Alexi is back playing in MLS with the L.A. Galaxy. He shaved his goatee and cut his hair short --- some people don't even know it's the same guy!
He is generally a starter and is having a decent year -- still playing defender. Yes, the Galaxy had qualified for the World Club Championships to be played in Spain in August, but they were cancelled by FIFA after the whole Swiss marketing company bankruptcy fiasco. L.A. has a good team (Cobi Jones, Luis Hernandez, Maurico Cienfeguos) -- battling San Jose (with Landon Donovan, Jeff Agoos, Ronnie Ekelund and Manager Frank Yallop) for 1st place in their division. FYI, Alexi's best days on the field are behind him.....he'll probably play for a couple more years and then head back to the broadcast booth. |

Why do you keep prattling on about this sad mediocrity ? Is it love ?
Talking of sad mediocrities, did you see our Valerian giving that guy a bear hug (on the edge of the penalty area) in the Lens game ? And they said Ron was a good judge of a player ! ![]() |

I though Donovan was at Dortmund or Werder Bremen or some other german side?
He's quality though, seen him play in international games, and he really would be a good signing. ![]() |

Celestial - why are you picking on curiousamerican? He is hardly saying we should sign Lalas - just relaying his knowledge of the MLS Americans and the latest links with Crystal Palace.
RDS - I think Donovan went to Leverkusen but has now returned to the MLS. Yet another promising youngster. I actually just read about a 12 year old superstar in the making - an American called Abu (originally from Ghana). Apparently Inter Milan offered his family $1 Million if he joined them. They turned them down even though they are very poor. |

Steve in Phoenix,
So, you're a reader of www.internetsoccer.com or www.bigsoccer.com -- which is it? You're right on about both Lalas and Landon Donovan...I don't recommend Alexi for your squad at Palace....and Landon did return from Bayer Leverkusen to the States after 2 years.....though, Leverkusen gets first rights at him in a couple of years. I've been thinking about making a trip to London so I could see a few Americans in action.....the bummer is that it seems both Premier League and 1st Division play at the same time....would there be any way to catch a Crystal Palace game and Tottenham game in the same weekend? thanks. |

Isn't Landon Donovan the player who scored four goals for the West in the West vs East MLS All Stars game recently, I saw this on a "World Football" programme on Sky the other day. If it is the same player, we have no chance of signing him RDSdaEagle.

curiousamerican - thanks for confirming the details.. its a shame Leverkusen have first dibs, but then again we cant sign every american and I think European clubs are wising up to Project 40.. Actually I think I saw the Abu story from a link in your post for mlsnet.com or I followed a link from there.
Youll have to study the schedules carefully but there could be a Palace game on Saturday and a Spurs game on Sunday (or vice versa), depending on TV scheduling which is only done 3 months in advance or so. Sometimes a Friday night game for a Div 1 match. To be honest you would be better off watching Palace to see Americans in action I was really surprised Keller went to Spurs.. I dont think he has much chance of getting top spot from Neil Sullivan. But anyway there should be at least one w/e with Palace on Sat and Spurs on Sun. |

Landon Donovan did score a hat-trick in the MLS All-Star game and is w. the San Jose Earthquake. He's been getting a lot of attention this season and you'll see him in the headlines quite a bit on MLSnet.
Alexi is w. LA and although he isn't as good as he used to be (was he that good?), he is in the lineup. I saw him this season and he still is a fan fav, only b/c people know his name. MLS and the US National team have developed a lot lately ... I can name these Americans in England at the moment. Anyone that I'm missing? Greg Berthalter, Jovan Kirovski, Ben Olsen, Eddie Lewis, Marcus Hahneman, Brad Freidel, Joe Max-More, Kasey Keller. Jonathan Palace@Palace-Eagles.com Palace-Eagles.com

John Thorrington at Huddersfield Town (D2) Ian Joy at Kidderminster (D3) Stefani Miglioranzi at Portsmouth (D1) James Bishop at some Conference club, can't remember who Boaz Myhill at West Ham (Prem) Zak Whitbread at Liverpool (Youth team) Olsen isn't in England, he's in U.S. recovering from his foot injury, out for the season.. There are probably a few others out there that I can't think of right now.. Also for others... Leverkusen still owns Donovan (I think).. They just loaned him to MLS for first team action because he couldn't break the first team there.. He'll return back to Leverkusen for training (I think) after the MLS season is over.. And that's nothing... MLS have rejected a $5 million for 16-year old DC United striker Santino Quaranta from a Premiership club. Also rejected a $2.5 million offer from Tenerife for DaMarcus Beasley. We got loads of young talent here.. Last edited by A Yank : 15-08-2001 at 09:53 AM. |

Steve, I wasn't picking on Curious, and I appreciate his info.
Fieldy started this ill-named thread. I'm glad it's turned into a (much more interesting) general assessment of US players. ![]() |

Yank,
Well done on the comprehensive list of Americans....but, I'm not sure Leverkusen actually "owns" contract on Donovan, I understand it to be first "rights" on him -- maybe just legal lingo. I'm excited about our young players, but let's take it easy...not sure that we can say, "We got loads of young talent here." Regarding the 12-year kid....he was born in Ghana but came to USA with his family when he was 8...he should be able to become a US citizen by the time he is 16. Regarding "Project-40"...it's kind of complicated, but basically, it is an effort by MLS and USSF to identify young (16-20 years old) talent and sign them to a contract before they go to/or finish college. In the last few years, it has been very successful in signing youngsters and getting to begin to train as professionals as teenagers --- this is a new thing in the US --- previously nearly all went to college to continue their playing. Hope all is well across the pond....and yes, you would like to sign Clint Mathis, Landon Donovan or another youngster (24yrs): Josh Wolff...Eddie Pope has been a bit of a disappointment -- too many injuries. |

Leverkusen do own Donovan's rights. He's on a glorified loan for two seasons, with MLS having a buyout clause for his permanent transfer. Or he could go back to Bayer, as soon as this offseason, if only to train with the team, or even to play. Donovan has been quoted that part of him wants to go back to Germany to prove himself.
Anything can happen regarding this. Most likely thing is that he stays for the two years with MLS, and after that (and an appearance in Japan/Korea), who knows? |
