You have to give the Walsall board credit, really. They've given Merson an awful lot of time and loyally stuck by him (must be for well over two years now, if not three) despite the fact that he's taken them pretty much nowhere but down. He can hardly say he hasn't been given every chance.

Walsall strike me as -- despite the rather soul-less stadium -- a nice, well run club. Let's hope their new manager delivers the progress they deserve.

That's true and he didn't seem convinced of his own ability to do well when I saw him interviewed.

I reckon he could still do a job on the pitch for us though!

Walsall were all but down when he took over. I saw Walsall play a pre-season friendly at Bromsgrove Rovers last August - their last match before the season kicked off. Merson ran the show and was getting very frustrated at his players for not doing what he asked (shouted) at them to do.

Halfway through the seond half he played a lovely through ball to one of his strikers who then made a complete hash of a shot and Merson cried out "right, that's it you're not f***ing playing on Saturday. Merson substituted the guy then a few mintues later ran from the halfway line beatnig the defence and chipping the goalie to put th eball in the back of the net. He then turned round to the bench and shouted "that's how you're supposed to do it!"

He was class.

Not sure what the Board expected after they sold the Saddler's best striker to Leicester only recently, the sale coincided with their recent shocking run.
