Copy right at football matches

At Derby on Saturday I was asked by a steward to stop taking photographs during the game. He told me it was because of copy right. Not heard of this before. Checked my ticket and the programme and found no mention of this. Does this apply at all grounds? If so I have a highly illegal set of photos.

Got the same treatment at Sheffield Wednesday. But the steward there told me if I continued to take photos he would confiscate my camera! Some grounds seem to let you do what you want while others are very harsh over the issue

Perhaps it is just heavy handed stewards, which they were at Hillsborough as well. Question is are they right? Any legal EAGLES still up?

There were several signs outside pride park stating what could not be taken into the ground, cameras was one. I saw the same at Elland rd last tuesday too.

It is illegal. I'm not sure of the exact rules but any photo taken in a football ground is copyright of the home club (or the football league).

I remember at Ninian Park two years ago the stewards told a bunch of our lot that they couldn't take pictures inside the ground. So what did they do? Took pictures of the steward. And too right too.

So if you can't take photographs does that mean the BBS is potentially in trouble for showing fan photographs from the grounds?!

You are not allowed to take photos in any football ground, it is, to my knowledge the same all over Europe. It doesn't stop people doing it, but it is not allowed.

I have been told by stewards at several places (both Prem and (Old) Div 1, as well as non-league) that the photo ban is of the MATCH. You can (I was told) take photos before and after the game and at HT etc., but not of the game itself as this was copyrighted to Sky!
Most stewards, in my experience, will turn a blind eye as long as you are not taking a load or doing any harm.

I contacted the Football league about this and received the following reply.

It is covered by copyright law. But individual clubs are at liberty to make their own limits.

Dear Sir

Whilst the ground regulations, which you are deemed to accept when you enter a ground, state as below, it would be a matter for the individual club whether this was allowed.

14 No person (other than a person who holds an appropriate licence) may bring into the Ground or use within the Ground any equipment, which is capable of recording or transmitting (by digital or other means) any audio, visual or audio-visual material or any information or data in relation to the Match or the Ground. Copyright in any unauthorised recording or transmission is assigned (by way of present assignment of future copyright pursuant to section 91 of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988) to the Club.

We can only suggest that you contact the relevant club/s directly in this regard.

Thank you FAE. Seems like one of those situations where some will turn a blind eye whilst others will make an issue.
So often at away games stewards want to be seen to be doing somthing. I guess the stewards at Selhurst are just as much a pain in the Arsenal to the away fans.
Still taking the camera to Leicester!!

Since photos taken inside grounds are covered by section 91 of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 -- if the copyright owner, in this case the Club, wish to pursue it in the courts they can do if they believe there is an infringement of the said act.

Publishing such photos for public viewing on websites could be construed as an infringement of this law.

I think it's pretty stupid as there is no financial gain to the fan.

However they (the fan) and potentially the site could be asked to answer a case in court if the Club wished to prosecute it.
