Dynamo - Defending the Honour
There's been a few threads mentioning this over time but not one actually about it so here goes.
Bought this book from amazon a few days ago and sat down and read it. Whilst it was quite an odd book to read, it took me about 3 hours to finish it. It was such an amazing story and the chap has clearly done his research. Myself and my dad are hopefully going to the Ukraine soon, a visit to the statue at Dynamo stadium is definitely required. My dad was in tears by the end of it. My grandad (who is currently very ill) was a POW from the Ukraine in Cologne. Anyhoo, well worth a read.

On a vaguelly similar note, is the current Ukraine coach Oleg Bluchkin (sp??) the same chap that played for Dynamo and is probably the Ukraine's most famous sportsman ever?

Yes, Blokhin played for the USSR and was the first Soviet player to play outside the USSR. He also coached in Greece and has dabbled in politics - supported the Russian backed Yanukovich in 2003 but has since admitted he may have been wrong in supporting Yanukovich.
(You might find that some Ukrainians would choose Shevchenko or one of the Klitschko brothers as more famous sportsmen but that's debatable I guess ... Their ground is well worth a visit Elliott - make sure you go the city centre one (I posted a pic that I took during a visit a few years ago http://forums.cpfc.org/showthread.ph...=&pagenumber=3 ) and not the Olympic Stadium where they play Euopean matches. There is an official website but it's in Russian and Ukrainian only. This is quite a good English one: http://www.mindspring.com/%7egoliath74/DynamoK.html |

Blokhin's also a fully paid up member of the Ukrainian National Front.
Some choice comments about the country's black, foreign imports recently. To (almost word for word) paraphrase, "let them (Ukrainian younsgters) learn from Shevchenko and not from some Zumba-Bumba they took off a tree and gave bananas to". Nice. ![]()

On a separate issue, I love the colouring of the Ukraine flag. Reminds me of our Play Off winning colours. If the kit was truly a Brazil style one, we'd have had green trim on the shirt not sky blue.

I rememeber him playing in the 80's didnt realise he was such a c*nt. I'll be hoping the Ukraine lose al their games and he gets the sack. The book is a great example of what such ignorant views can lead too. |

He's a member of the Social Democratic Party of Ukraine (United) and by no stretch of the imagination could it be compared with the National Front. Corrupt in the past, yes, certainly tried to put its house in order since the Orange Revolution and with some success. And left of centre too. Quote:
Anyone concerned about democracy should be hoping that Ukraine make it through to the second phase, certainly further forward than Russia, as Ukraine has a democracy, unlike Russia. (And if you're looking for ignorant views look no further than Bowyer, Donkey Face, and a thousand other English footballers ... |

Indeed Ruskin.
Got my Ukraine shirt sorted for the World Cup last night. I might try and get a scarf for my Grandad. Anyway, back on track. Did anyone else think that Trusevich seemed a little like Kiraly? Clearly difficult to compare for obvious reasons, but on the field they seem the same sort of pioneering goalkeeper and off the field the mad but quite sage friend.

John, I am aware of his political membership but his public comments are exactly the same as what one could expect from a member of the BNP over here. If those beliefs are deemed to be left of centre in Ukraine then I'm concerned about just how spitefully racist the true right wingers are. I know about your ties with Ukraine but you must admit that what OB said is disgusting. You mention Bowyer but he isn't an MP or national team coach. To say others are just as bad isn't good enough nowadays. |

you beat me too it. If bowyer became england manager then we'd have a problem. To allow someone that makes such openly disgusting comments to run your national football and lead your country in such a huge global sporting event is plain wrong. |

As a regular visitor to said country do you imagine that I keep my mouth shut while I'm there. There are plenty of threads on this board about racism in eastern Europe so I rather imagine that Palace supporters will have a greater appreciation of their problems than most. Challenging said racism with diplomacy ain't easy but it's worth the effort. (Racism isn't seen as a left-right issue btw.) Back to the topic of the thread ... praise for the book, yes, as it's a poignant reminder of the bravery of those footballers. |
