away goals?

does anybody know for sure if away goals don't count in these playoffs? they didnt against sunderland because we would have gone out on away goals. If away goals don't count then i ask what the point is of having two legs, you would have thought the football league would have a 1 off game at a neutral venue?

Of course away goals count

What I think you are asking is do they at any stage count double - and the answer is no.

Apparently it was unfair that the team that is at home 2nd, finished higher in the league and therefore should have all the advantages faces a higher proportionate chance of going out on away goals if the 2nd leg is at their ground.

Basically, the team finishing lower would then (because of extra time) have two hours to score an away goal when the home team only had 90 minutes.

Maybe they should have it so that away goals only count double when the scores are level at the end of the 1st 90 minutes of the second leg.

Well why not have 2 legs?

Probably because they think the better side is more likely to win over 2 games rather then fluke a one off.

AFAIK away goals do count double (in the event that the scores are level...). They used to operate the rule in the play offs (we would have beaten Blackburn even had Wright not scored the third goal and has Hoppo not scored at Molineux, we would have been eliminated), then they stopped using it (which is why Powell's goal against Sunderland took the game to extra time), but they reintroduced it for last year's Play Offs.

It's interesting that they don't adopt the same philosophy in the Champions League/UEFA Cup.

Thank god for that! I hate the away goal rule.

I think scrapping the away goal is definitely a good move.

With the away goal rule in place, keeping clean sheets (mainly at home) becomes so important. Like LP said, it would def change things if they used it in the Champions League for example.

You only have to look at the two semi-finals this season. 2 goals scored in the 4 matches. Scrapping the away goal rule slightly changes the focus to scoring goals as opposed to not conceding goals.

Incorrect. Away goals do not count double, and did not when we played Sunderland

If away goals counted double we'd have lost to Sunderland...
