Popovic A-League Bound?
I was watching the weekly football show on SBS this afternoon. A segment of the show involved rumours of A-League acquisitions. One interesting "rumour" was raised:
Presenter, "You've got some news on Crystal Palace's Tony Popovic?" Branko Culina (Soccer NSW football services manager), "Let's just say Tony has taken a lot of interest in the A-League recently." Interesting.

Not sure. One search comes up with Sept 2007 another search comes up with June 2006.

Stupid question of the day - is the A league the Australian league?
If so, I've heard strong rumours that he wants to go home permanently.

Correct, on what looks to be both counts. Surely time for Hudson to stand up and be counted.

Good luck to him. Good servant of the club, now past his sell-by date. Send him off with a pat on the back.

But I wonder how many "pub-league" players will have been selected to play in the forthcoming World Cup or have ever captained their country, a First Division side to promotion or a Premier League club? Popovic may well have reached the end of his career at Palace, but isn't he entitled to respect and appreciation from all our fans for what he helped our club to achieve while he has been with us? I'm not sure his fellow Palace players would be very happy to think that when their careers are ending they would be similarly unceremoniously consigned to the "scrap-heap" by our fans? I totally agree with Freddy , we soon get p*ssed off when a good player in his prime leaves , we can atleast show respect to any player who tries their very best , even if their best is not up to the standard required.

i dont recall saying i havent appreciated that he once was ok, hes now not thats the reality. i feel more sorry for the fans that have paid to watch his rubbish performances in the premiership and this season in the championship than i ever will for him being on the scrap-heap. |

I think this will happen and it's the right thing for both parties.

I'm fairly sure that he signed a new 2 year deal after the play-off final. I'd be surprised if he's still at Palace next season. |

Played a major role in our recess "success" but is not good anymore.
We're got to be ruthless and clear the dead wood. Best of luck Popovic, especially in the World Cup (on an individual note...!)

I can't see him being any use to us next season. So if he wants to return to Autstralia then let him.
He's not the player he used to be. I respect Poppa for all he's done in his time at Palace but i think now the time for him to leave has come. |

Think he'd still be useful for another year as a bit of experience to help hold together what looks like being a fairly young squad, but best of luck to him if he's off. Have liked the filthy Ozzer ever since his debut (I stand to be corrected?) at Orient, and the double headers he scored in one early appearance at Selhurst, I've been screaming his name at every corner ever since, not worked once!

Well said Fred. Whatever happens in the coming few weeks, I will be keeping an eye on Pop at the World Cup. I feel he has always given his all for Palace and I don't recall him ever complaining about being on the bench....in your recall, you forgot to mention his goal against England!
Plus he takes a wicked penalty.. |
