Well Played Will Antwi!

Nice to see one of Palace's ex-Academy boys, a contemporary of Ben
Watson and Wayne Routledge, play a storming game at centre-back
for Wycombe Wanderers v Cheltenham in the second-leg of their
play-off semi-final. Sadly the game ended in a 0-0 draw
allowing Cheltenham to go through to the final 2-1 on
aggregate, but Will showed he has made considerable
progress since he was allowed to leave Palace to join
Aldershot in 2003, and is probably benefitting from
now playing alongside Rob Lee (Charlton, Newcastle
& England) and Tommy Mooney (Watford, Birming-
ham, Swindon & Oxford).

He showed his versatility tonight by playing as an
attacking midfielder in the first half, prompting
several attacks, and reverting to a more orthodox
centre-back position for most of the second half.

At 21, he is a player who is still capable of develop-
ment at a higher level in the game, and I was one
who greatly regretted his departure from Selhurst
Park.

Having witnessed this encounter I am 'Agog' at this statement on the basis that as far as I was concerned 'Antwi' played alongside the 'Wycombe' captain 'Johnson' in the centre of defence.
The 'Wycombe' midfield comprised Messrs Betsy, Lee, Bloomfield and Martin.

Trolley, fear you are viewing Antwi's first-half role last night for
Wycombe in a somewhat formal, nay, pedantic, way!

Whilst you may be formally correct in naming Wycombe's mid-
field, if you have an opportunity of watching the game again
you will see that up to half time, Antwi spent at least as much
time playing in Cheltenham's half, helping to re-inforce Wy-
combe's virtually non-stop assault on Cheltenham as he did
performing his orthodox defensive duties and was effective-
ly played as an additional attacking midfielder!*

Will and Wycombe were aided in this tactic by the extremely
conservative(apologies!)tactics employed by the Cheltenham
manager who decided to pack his midfield and hang on to his
side's narrow one goal first-leg lead. As it turned out the
home side's tactics paid off, but due much more to Wycombe's
diabolical finishing than to anything else........

*Many of us who watched Antwi regularly playing for the Academy
U19's and our Reserves, were impressed not only by his defensive
abilities, but with how comfortable he was on the ball, his vision
and leadership qualities, which were exceptional for someone
so young. In my view he was an uncut diamond.

Sounds like some qualities we were running short of this season especially running up to and during the playoffs.

Remember watching this chap play a couple of pre season friendlies a few years back. One thing that stuck with me was how assured he looked on the ball . I was very surpised when Palace let him go.....still we have the speed of pops and the precision passes of Hall to compensate for any loss

I saw him play quite a few times while he was at Palace and thought he was Hopkins and Lacy shocking. He's come on a bit since then it seems.

How true! Have a similar feeling about Togwell, who I fear,
is about to be depart to Port Vale, for whom he has distin-
guished himself on loan and has also acquired the ability to
score from midfield.....

I remember him on that Channel 4 series on the Academy lads which featured Wayne, Chris Dobson etc. Antwi struck me as very well educated, but was also the only one who argued back at the coaches (often justifiably so). I always assumed he was binned for insubordination !! Great pity.

I was there, he played at the back all game, alongside their captain, Johnson
