Are we now a year behind southampton???
Just a thought -
Know a few southampton fans and they do seem to have had a transitional season this year, and certainly by the end of the season they seemed to start turning some of those many draws into wins - think the feeling down there is that come next season they will be more ready for a promotion push... Having taking the gamble of keeping the vast majority of our squad in a failed bid for immediate promotion, we now seem destined for a fairly significant overhaul this close season - fear we could be building up for our 'transitional season'...... |

I have recently been in conversation with 'George Burley' just after he returned from 'Poland' and he stated that his 'Southampton' team secured ALL the points in 5 out of their last 6 league games, their only 'Reverse' being against our beloved team !!

Yes. We are behind them, in that they are better placed for next season. That was obvious when a few weeks ago when their kids outplayed us.
Burley is doing a Coppell.

We are not behind yet, but if the player exodus does happen then yes, we probably will be. Depends who the next manager is, and how quickly they settle into the job.

Southampton will be a major force next season, I reckon. Having said that, I wouldn't necessarily rate them on their performance against us. We were pretty poor on the day - as we were many days, to be fair.

Southampton will be in the top 3 next season.
It's all set up there now for a return to Premiership football. Very good manager, excellent youth set-up, a training ground which wouldnt look out of place at the likes of Arsenal or Man Utd, a fantastic stadium and the fanbase as well.

I dont think we are behind yet. It depends what preparations we make in pre season. If the palace manager whoeve that may be gets in 3-4 decent players with the AJ money and gets them training as a unit before the season starts we have got every chance of getting out of the traps quickly.
I think the foundations are their for a promotion push as long as the playing staff and especially the tactics are tinkered with.

Leeds have shown what can be done in a short space of time as has Burley don't forget he has only had half a season.

They are my tip for the title.
With a few more additions, they will be VERY strong.

Didn't Southampton win the Youth League by quite a way the other year? That Nathan Dyer's not bad either!

They were better than us at selhurst and should have won easily. If I was a betting man I would say Southampton will finish above us next season, if things stay as they are a Palace.

By sheer co-incidence, I had recently been engaged in conversation with regard to 'Dyer' and was informed that the laddie is a natural 'Right Winger' but has also been deployed on the wide left by 'Southampton'.The laddie has an abundance of 'energy' and is exceedingly fleet of foot but at this juncture in his 'development' he is lacking a certain physical strength. ![]()

Are we a 'year behind Southampton' ? No. it doesn't work like that. The clubs are different, the players are different, the finances are different, the management is different.
Each club is unique - some teams bounce straight back, some teams go into freefall. It is all specific to the individual set of circumstances. Of course it is quite possible that we could follow a similar pattern to Southampton, but not very likely.

One thing.
Two years ago I remember Forest went through a similar period of recovery after changing their manager and only lost something like 1 in their last 12. Everyone thought that they had the foundations in place to go on and challenge for Promotion the next season, yet they ended up being relegated. You can never tell what's going to happen. Southampton look a decent bet for next season right now, but they've been playing without pressure for nigh on two months, just going out to enjoy themselves almost. It will be interesting to see what happens when they are faced with the pressure of being one of the promotion favourites next season. |

The thing that worries me, is that if Dowie does go, then once again we will be late in preparing for next season, as we will have to wait for a new Manager to be appointed.

And there was us under the impression he was a big strapping target man who likes to play through the middle, but is lacking in pace. |
