External Hard Drive
As a computer novice, can somebody tell me if an external hard drive is as simple as plugging it into a USB port and installing the specific CD?
I only need a 20gb one as its only for an old computer. I only need it so I can use update my iTunes. I may as well ask for some recomendations as well. Only specification is that its cheap!

If you have Win ME or later you will not need the driver CD at all.
If you have Win 98 you will need the driver CD. If you have Win 95 - don't bother. |

Hi all. Just up'ing this. Basically, I purchased a 30GB one - a portable one as its for my laptop. As I think I mentioned I only want to use it for a 30GB iPod so didn't need a bigger one. Anyway, I've now got it and was annoyed to find it already has to use about 13GB with other things so in reality, for me its only 17GB. Do I need to keep these folders already on there or can I get rid of them because they all seem to be on my original hard drive?
Had I known this I would have purchased a larger size but had no idea of this. Amateur mistake. I've attached the folders.

Are you sure that the E: drive is your new USB external drive? Did you buy it second hand? You certainly should not have the need for any data on your new external drive, although they do sometimes come bundled with free backup software and stuff, what you have shown on that picture looks nothing like a free bundle.

Or I suppose the other thing that may have happened is that the install has done some sort of automatic backup onto the new drive...?

I noticed you said that you only want it to sort out your itunes. If you get this sorted (I can't help you unfortunately), would you perhaps be willing to sell it? PM me if interested.

That's what it looks like to me. Probably one of these one click backup jobbies. In trying to make everything so simple, they confuse the hell out of people...

Cheers AWFOW and LP, I'll have a go at backing it up then deleting it and see what happens. Thanks again.
elliott, I'm using it to store tracks for my iPod so I'll be using it for a long time. Its works a treat and was only £30 on eBay so you should have a search.

I say "it works a treat" but its been causing me nothing but stress and problems over the last couple of days. At the moment, I plug it into my USB, it acknowledges it because it makes that sound, but does not show up on "My Computer" - searching for "E:/" is no good neither.
I unistalled it last night and reinstalled it and it was fine then. This morning however, the problem is back. Anybody have any ideas what I can do to sort it out long term?

Urgh, ffs, this is killing me.
I cannot even remove the hardware now because I can't remember how. Last night I found out how to via the Windows Help but cannot find it now. And Google is only saying "Control Panels > Add/Remove Hardware" but I've only got "Control Panels > Add Hardware" with no option to remove it. Urgh!

Argh, what a load of rubbish. Managed to unistall it. Then I went to install it, and whilst it was recognised, it prompted me...
Found New Hardware A problem occured during hardware installation. Your new hardware might not work properly. Unbelievable. Where did you get yours from Archiebald Leitch? I may have to just cut my losses Still want to buy it off me elliott? ![]()

Must say I'm a bit confused by this, speaking as an alledged expert, USB stuff is generally dead simple to use.
If as you say you are running Windows XP then pluging in and using a USB external disk should be as simple as that ... plug it in, switch it on and away you go. No need for any software drivers or un-installing and re-installing, coz the operating system just picks it up. And to unplug it when you've done with it just double-click the little icon down by the clock that looks like an oblong with a green arrow over it. This will list all the USB devices currently plugged in and it should be easy to identify the disk, highlight it and click stop. You will then be told to unplug the device. Simple. Without wishing to be a scare-monger, you may have uninstalled the whole USB driver system, which will mean you will get the 'Found New Hardware' thing every time you plug in a USB device. To test this, do you have any other USB devices like a digital camera or a scanner. Just see what happen when you connect them. If you do need to re-install the USB drivers, you'll need your original XP disk that came with the system when you bought it. Don't panic, it's only software and it's repairable ... It just might cost you a couple of beers for your local computer geek.

Ta for your time Sluggo. Yeah, its definately not the USB because I sometimes use my iPod for storage and have done so just moments ago.
Do you reckon that I could have damaged it by not double clicking the little icon when I pull it out because I haven't been doing that? I've tried it on the family computer and got prompted with the same message as well.
