Neil Redfearn
Whilst wiling away some time at Lakeside yesterday afternoon, I came across Neil Redfearn's autobiography "There's only one Neil Redfearn". I quickly skimmed through the section on Palace. He speaks very highly of Steve Coppell and Bright and Wright. He also talks about the stick he and Geoff Thomas got for being northerners. He tells an amusing anecdote of turning up to Mitcham on the first day of pre-season training in a dodgy Ford Capri. He says that Andy Gray offerred to have his mates torch it for a share of the insurance. He says that he thought Andy Gray was joking! His Palace career is covered in about a dozen or so pages, but make interesting reading.

He wanted to leave "to go up Nooorth to be with his family".
He went to Watford. Sound familiar?

Is that right? I know he had a spell with the hornets, but I thought he went to Oldham first. I always rated him - he had a great cross with both feet.

He did. I remember when we bought him and GT initially thinking that Redfearn was the better player. That proved wholly inaccurate as we all know.

I certainly preferred him to Salako at that time, but Johnny was still a kid then and had a lot to learn.

Wasn't he only at Palace for about 18 months.
In the promotion year when he played up at Watford he took some stick but took it well.

I'm pretty sure that Alex Dyer signed for us after NR had gone. Wasn't NR's era around the time that Dyer always scored against us?

Indeed. I remember a very vociforous Palace following packed into the allotment end terrace singing songs about Redferan being a rent boy....followed by that sweet Phil barber strike. Still one of my most memorable results. It was a vital game from what I remember |

I always thought Redfearn was a decent player and would have liked him to have a longer stay at Palace. Im sure it was him who scored that 30 yard screamer against us in our return to the premiership while at barnsley and went on to get quite a few goals that season.

Too slow for the wing, but a good cross you're right.
I remember him getting his shirt ripped apart in 1988, everyone else was kicking the ball about by the (old) tunnel, fat, slow, old Neil was left on the left wing. Couldn't make it to the tunnel and was left in only his pants as I recall.

I dunno, look how many goals he got in his first season - I think he averaged a goal every other game until he got injured. He was never the same player when he came back, but he did score quite a few for the clowns if I remember correctly.
