Friendlies
18TH JULY- Vs TIVERTON TOWN 7.30 PM
21ST JULY- Vs TORQUAY UNITED 3.00 PM 24TH JULY- Vs EXETER CITY 7.30 PM 31ST JULY- Vs SUTTON UTD 8.00 PM 4TH AUGUST- Vs OXFORD UTD 3.00 PM Hardly an opportunity to show how we can set the world alight is it? OK I know that friendlies arent important and too much shouldnt be read into the results, but one home game against half decent opposition might not have been a bad idea? |

When was the last time we played a friendly against a team better / bigger than us. I vaguely remember Leicester last year, but can't remember the score. I think Harris scored a throw in. But i might be imagining it.

I agree.
I would have tought a London Prem team would love to play us. At our gaffe it could be a real revenue bonanza. Or how about Brighton? ![]() |

In light of last years performances and results - thank God we're not playing a Premiership club.
At least we can go on tour to the west country. ------------------ I'm on my way...... |

Being such a passionate lot of fans and on a high despite a crap season, I would have thought a pre-season taster at Selhurst against a side from the top two divisions would be quite a good money spinner if promoted through the right channels in the summer build up.
I even set aside the week to go to Spain to follow Palace out there but just my luck that there are no games to go to ![]() This message has been edited by Al from Bromley on 24 May 2001 at 11:55 |

Is that confirmed Al. We could perhaps have organised a home game against decent foreign competition. |

Bradbury scored ours, I think.
Arphexad didn't touch the throw it went straight into the net. If he had of touched it, it would have counted as a goal. |

I am happy to be wrong but my recollection is that the goal was disallowed for a foul on Arphexed and not because no one touched it. I stand to be corrected obviously. ------------------ 'Staunton from the halfway line......... |

You may be right 917k, my memory is not what it was. I've actually got a video of the game indoors (don't ask), I'll check it out over the weekend, if I remember

Pre season friendlies are just about match fitness and getting players used to formations, new boys etc. The results don't particularly matter (unless it was millwall last year!) and the last thing a manager wants is a friendly played like a cup tie because it's against a rival or another london team. Can you imagine some of the tackles flying in if we played brentford or bighton for example?
No, go for nice low key games and concentrate on getting the team ticking over, there's enough games during the normal season without attracting injuries or fatigue even before we've started. |

I didnt advocate Millwall or Brighton or Charlton, but I dunno, for example Southampton, Ipswich, Coventry - teams with which we have no history but would provide a bit more of a spectacle than Tiverton .

Playing against better teams should in theory make our lads try a bit harder.
I have lost track of the amount of times I have been to pre season friendlies against lower league opposition and come away thinking what a waste of time that was. Understandably the lads are never up for it and it is treated as a bit of a kick about but if we were to play a couple of decent teams then in theory we should see a more competitive game. Or am I being naive? ![]() ================ Formerly known as paterick |
