We've bought a tank & all the accessories today & have set it up. I saw a lovely yellow fish today that looked like it had purple eyeshadow on, it was very cute, about 6cm, quite round. Any ideas on what it might be called? As in the breed, not what we could name it.
Thanks Catty

Is it a marine fish? Or are you looking at tropical?
Marine fish take serious time and effort to look after and cost a fair whack too! If it is a marine fish then it sounds like a type of Anthia although these are not exactly 'round'. ![]() If a tropical fish then as the poster above mentioned it is probably a type of Discus. ![]()

I guess that was a half clue! Anthia it ain't then!I just clicked into the last post without really reading the original title as it was such an old thread. Plus the store that all this stuff came form may have had marine fish alongside their tropical range. The colour description sounds more marine than tropical though.

It's tropical. It does look like that one.
Our tank is pretty small so we are going to get a betta & some neon Tetras I think. Going to get advice from the place we get them from. |

Neons are great in a fair sized group and can be quite effective. If I could start my 125L tank all over again I would have corys, a plec, a bucket load of neons and possibly a couple of other 'centre piece' fish but no more. Have fun with it - I find fish a really rewarding hobby even if I do spend a lot of time elbow deep in water or refreshing my plant's DIY carbon setup! Post pics when you get it populated ![]()

They do indeed. To be fair my tank is so planted it is hard to see the fish anyway! This is the last pic I took of my tank a few months ago - the plants hadn't taken hold fully at this time. Now they have probably doubled in size and are growing fully thanks to my CO2 and liquid feed. The moss especially has now grown around the whole of the filter casing which is much nicer to look at. The central java fern and sword have also gone wild. The crypts plod on slowly and the wisteria just goes beserk, a really easy plant that you simply can not kill not matter what you do to it. I have to chop out quite a bit on a weekly basis to keep it in check.

Like you I have successfully kept tropicals since the early 70's. Having read this thread I am shocked that all my stock didn't die instantly and how on earth they happily bred year on, year out is beyond me. All they have ever had is under gravel filters which got cleaned every few months if I remembered and lots of whatever pond weed I managed to lift from where I had been fishing that week. Jeez, when the kids were growing up they invariably dumped a lump of frog spawn in the tanks and enjoyed the high speed metamorphism that warm water afforded them. The more aggressive inhabitants enjoyed a diet of fresh tadpoles whilst the tadpoles which made it to frog status did it two weeks before those hatched in the wild and were subsequently released back into the pond where the spawn had been lifted from. Looks like i've been doing it all wrong since 1968 as clearly I haven't kept up with the latest thinking and have subsequently not realised I should have been spending a small fortune on creating an environment that would allow my stock to thrive and happily breed. I guess no one told my fish they were living in a deprived environment and that they shouldn't breed like crazy and thrive in the septic tank that they were housed in. ![]()

Oi Mrs lanepe stop posting in my log on!
Anyway we bought a BiOrb Flow. One of these: flow30white.jpg That's obviously a stock image rather than our actual tank but it looks pretty similar with the white pebbles and a similar amount of coloured plant life. Ours will look a lot better later in the week when we get some fish in it! Then I'll post some pics.

We have our first arrival! Boone is a Molly, yellow with black fins & tail. He's called Boone because the fishy place advised us to get one, see how he goes then get the others next week. He's called Boone because they are all being named after people from lost & just in case, we all know what happened to Boone... I'll post a pic when I'm not posting from my phone!

What else do u want to get?? I got 2 guppys today to add to my tank and got some new plants too. I'm surprised I've been quite successful! The platies bred but all the fry died (one lasted about 8 months!!) and a tetra has disapeared too. But currently have 3 platys, 5 neons, 2 guppys a yoyo loach and a Pleco. Tank is probs at capacity now

I used to keep tropicals for a number of years, for the last 5 years or so ive been keeping marine/reef tanks, its a bit more work and costs alot more but I quite like the fact that there is always something to do.
Heres a pic of my last tank ![]() |
