Since this post all 3 original platys died not long after I put 2 guppys in so think they were bullied as the water was perfect!Catty both my female platys had fry within 2 months of gettin them. Most disappeared but a few survived, one for about 7 months. Currently I have 5 neons, 2 guppys, a pleco and a yoyo loach ![]() |

A yoyo loach? I'll have to look that one up! Strangely the next fish i was looking at getting is the simaly strangley name Coolie (or khooli) Loach, which are strange looking things but quite facinating. Quite a contrast to the zebra & leapard danios I have so far.

Don't suppose anyone could help me with a very shy platy ??
I have 2 guppies and 2 platy's. One of the guppies just stays on the gravel and doesn't do much. The platy's usually hide. Bloke in the shop said to get a few more (I have a 20L tank) this Friday. After reading up it seems that the MINIMUM amount of platy's you should have are 3....I'm hoping this will help them out of their shyness. As for the guppy, it seems they like to show off to females. (all my fish are male) But I don't really want fry tbh.

Yes, from what i've been learning numbers are a big thing with tropical fish. If there are too few some fight with other fish, some fight amongst themselves, and some are shy.

I only keep Platys, Mollies and Guppys these days. ( plus the assassin snail ) Sunday was the day for a full tank clean ( i do it once a year ) and am pleased to report that despite not buying any fish for over a year, there were 52 of the blighters in there. Lots of fry so something is going ok.

can anyone point me in the direction of any good resources/websites for setting up a good starter aquarium?
also how much did it cost to set up your aquariums? are they all freshwater? I want to set up a small one to see how i get on but I have always been put off by the price and time needed to get it going.

As an idea of costs, my tank was £20 second hand (64 litre), pump/filter £10.99, and heater was £8 (both Ebay).
You can get some nice all-in-one kits too. The important key is working out in advance what type of fish you want to keep, and build it up gradually in order to get the bacteria levels right. I have 6 Danios (3 zebra and 3 leopards) and 2 Yoyo Loaches. I had the tank running for two weeks adding filter booster daily, then added fish on a weekly basis (3,3, then 2). Next up is some Tetra, then probably some shimp for a bit of variaty. On the Thinkfish website you can save your tank and fish setup, and it tells you about compatability, also ideal temperatures and minimum/maximum fish amounts of each breed.

With it all running, and adding filter boost (i used the 'Lovefish' one from Pets at home) daily you can start adding a hardy breed of fish after a week. It's important to test the water regularily too (it's all rather daunting to start with, but you can get test stips that test everything that you check against a colour chart which make it easy). I'd say the initial setup cost me £70 if you include gravel and ornaments too.
