Sunday League
Last season my sunday league side narrowly escaped relegation despite being as good as any team in the league player for player in my opinion.
I Was wondering what any of the more experienced sunday league players / managers on the BBS though made a team successful at the lowest level? |

A solid defence, picking the same players in defence every week. If you sort that out, everything else will fall into place.

No, a left mid. But I was manager for my team for 2/3rds of last season, and the best way to really get a team going is to build a solid defensive platform. If you have talented strikers/midfielders, they'll do their job no matter what...but you can't win consistently if your defence is leaky.

True. Decent keepers are hard to find as well. My advice would be to train hard. Training for two hours every Tuesday worked well for us. When I didnt train I noticed the diffence in sharpness on a Sunday. |

We train for an hour and a half on thursdays. Good goalkeeper, bad defenders! You're probably right on the whole defence thing RDS, our best CB was unreliable at turning up each week, and the rest of them were just a bit poor!
(I would naturally like to blame the defence though because Im a striker) |

at sunday level, the difference is standard is a lot more prounounced, its not like professional where the margin between sides is small.
In that respect, there is very little a manager can do. You aim shouldn't be to win leagues etc. but to try and beat those not as good as you, and to pick up results against those who have slightly better individuals. That's you're tangible goal. I've run a Sunday team for 10 years, they aren't very good and we've only won a couple of things. But the small things you can do to influence is that everyone is fit enough to play, encourage as much communication between players during the game as possible, and people hold their positions properly, and the most important of all, that everyone enjoys it. Sunday football shouldn't be taken too seriously, its more about the friendships you build away from it, the cameraderie, and getting in the pub after the game. You foster a good spirit, and you'll soon be knicking results against sides that are a bit better than you, because everyone will be enjoying it and pulling together as a unit that little bit more. |

A good 'keeper is so important (as we have seen at Palace this year) because they spread confidence through the defence, a wobbly one means a wobbly defence.
During my (if I may say, extremely successful) period as a manager of a Sunday side, all the team (and me) were mates who worked for each other. To be honest we had some great players, a good keeper and a superb, massive centre half (ex Carshalton Athletic). One important thing is they all enjoyed playing and working for each other, keeping the same team every week, I agree, is also important. Rotation just causes problems. In our last season we won all our league and cup matches, we even won the massive punch-up at the presentation do, just before we got slung out of the Morden & District (I wouldn't recommend that bit though)

Intimidation and keeping half the team from turning up drunk every week helps.

Get a decent manager in. ![]() or... Forget tactics & formations. Play to your own strengths. If you come up a side with a player of a superior ability to any of yours, get one of your workhorses to man-mark him, don't let him even have a second on the ball. Get him to mark him whether your team be in posession of the ball not. Make it a 10 vs 10 contest. Important things at sunday league level are communication, fitness & camaraderie. (decent keeper is important too)

As a goalie myself I am biased but if you can get one who tells the defence what to be doing you are halfway there. The defence will sort themselves out straight away and can turn losses into wins.
And yes, if they have one player who is head and shoulders above every one else have him man marked.

Good post, but please don't give up so soon. If you don't play at some level, it is almost impossible to start again, as I found to my dismay. I tried a comeback at 42 and proceeded to throw by boots in the bin after begging to come off after 10 minutes! ![]()

True, Sunday league is often seen to be a bit micky mouse, but my Sunday day league side managed to thump a Saturday team 4-1 in a friendly. |

Hedgehog - it's the fitness (or lack of) that is killing me at the moment. IF i can get properly fit again I reckon i could keep going for another five years, if not next season will probably be my last.
