Windows XP Media Edition
I'm intrigued by this. From what I can see I could set this up at home, link it up to my cable TV and record everything I like at DVD quality ... is that right? (That's obviously not including streaming music and TV to every room in the flat via Xbox 360 apparently too!)

I'd like to know more and from anyone who has this, as I'm intrigued to know if I could use it to record from live TV - including services like On Demand and Sky Movies.

Anyone?

You need a TV card but basically yes you can do the above.

You can also goto http://www.team-mediaportal.com/ and download something similar instead that will just run on XP or finally depending on what version of Vista you buy media centre is thrown in too.

This thing that distrubs me is this "You need a TV card" - is that a decoder? If it is, surely that means I can't record from my cable TV ... ?

It is possible to record the cable through a tv card. You would be unlikly to get dvd quality though, and if you have HD you can forget that.

Which is why you need Linux to run it.

From my experience MediaPortal is the way to go - someone already posted the link above. Like MythTV it is open source and very customisable (with all the pros and cons that that entails) but it's very easy to install on a bog-standard windows box. However, I have heard that gbpvr is a better (Windows-based) bet for watching and recording TV. The downside is that it's only developed by some kid in his bedroom so updates and fixes are less frequent.

For people who may be terrified of giving MythTV a try because it's linux I can confirm that it is very easy to install.
