Palace books your are reading ?
I am currently reading "Hy on Palace", well, actually it is more looking at the pictures....fantastic...
I really like pages 227 - 233 when F Richmond turns up for training. Some of the other photos bring a lump to the throat, even some of the 70s clothing actually looks stylish ![]() |

I think the Eagle Eye book & Roy Peskett's book are arguably the best two Palace tome's

I bought it £20 new off Amazon last week and it arrived Monday. Still in the plastic wrapping and perfect condition. Great book though. 90% of it is before my time as I'm 25, but its fascinating to look through.

Roy Peskett's fantastic book takes the story up to 1969, but then what? How about 1969-90: A Biased Commentary, then 1990-2011: More Biased Commentary, both carefully designed to sit next to Peskett on your bookshelf |

I bought the 'book' about Billy Callender off ebay (for under a quid) a couple of weeks ago. Very interesting, but very sad too.

Just finished Jimmy Glass “one hit wonder” a great read. Solely purchased it due to his Palace connections, would recommend it to anyone.
A brief overview, a footballer who probably walked away from football having not earn’t a penny due to his gambling addiction. Glass looked after Super Al’s boot/kit as a YTS player. Mark Bright by all accounts gave a YTS a hiding for wearing his boots without his consent. Wright was a volatile character. Who Glass respected but due to a training ground argument invlolving Tony Finningan, Wright has since blanked Glass when ever there paths have crossed. There was a drinking culture (still affiliated with football in the late 80’s/early 90’s) and players would often stagger out of the legendary Blue Orchid, and struggle in to training. His best mate in football was ex-Palace full back Jamie Vincent who followed Glass down to Bournemouth a few years after Glass departed. Out of the 27 YTS trainees that signed in 89’ all but 3 were retained in 91’ inc Glass. Praises Coppell for his guidance and honesty (who he continued to speak to after leaving Palace) Felt let down by Alan Smith, most notably in May 1992’ Smith was left in charge for the final game at QPR away (Coppell I believe was having his wisdom teeth out) and instead of picking Glass and giving him his first game in what was a nothing match, Smith went to the FA and said Glass was injured (even though Jimmy had played 4 reserve games in a week) & the club managed to get Neil Sullivan in on a months loan (even though the reality was that it was a 24 hour end of season loan) Made vast comparisons with the 1992 FA youth cup squads. Where as Man Utd had numerous players go on to glittering careers (Scholes, Butt, Giggs, Beckham) 80% of the Palace youth team from that year were on the scrap heap within a 12 month period. I wasn’t aware but Glass states Wright reported Ron Noades to the chairman of the commission for racial equality after his C4 documentary (although this could be seen as an engineering a move from Palace, where the cracks were appearing) To Alan Smith’s credit, first thing he implemented when he took over in 1993/94 was to issue every squad member a club suit (almost to avoid the rich from the poor and unite players as a result) Glass would often play up front as a striker in training and a lot of the first team players didn’t look upon it fondly, and tried to bring him down a peg or two. Glass squared upto Andy Cole in the 95’ FA semi final reply when Keane was sent off, with Cole offering him out down the tunnel. In 1994/95 Glass was a premier reserve keeper earning but £300 a week, before getting injured in preseason and the club in turn signed Rhys Wilmot. States problem with players coming through youth academy they didn’t necessarily have as much control over salary as a youngster coming in from another club. Thoroughly enjoyed his time at Bournemouth. Went to Swindon managed by Steve McMahon a the time. Financial implications etc affected the club as a result. Previous agents included Rodney Marsh and was represented by a company owned by Mark Goldberg. When Goldberg’s company went into administration it was a blessing for Glass who at the time owed Goldberg’s company 14k, to this day he hasn’t paid it back. Glass openly talks about his gambling issues, betting on anything but predominantly casino’s. Former Carlisle chairman Michael Knighton was a ****, but for most of us not hard to see why. After scoring the goal for Carlisle, Glass hopped in the car and drove Dover and ended up unexpectedly in Belguim!! Story continues, but it is a great read and a sad reflection of what can happen in the modern game. Story continues……………..I’ve never met Jimmy, but he seems like a humble guy, who loves his family and is a was a tad naïve, could probably apply to a lot of us really. |

Still think "We all follow the Palace" is one of the better ones. (An Eagle Eye Publication)
