Tried the new indian (Rasoi?) takeaway, a couple of doors along from the Willy in Elmers End. Not just your standard Indian fayre on offer, a load of interesting and different stuff on their menu too.

First impressions were rather good apart from Poppadums that were a bit stale, but they were freebies (along with chutney & mint sauce) so couldn't really complain.

My Chicken Dhansak had a rather rustic feel to it with whole Toor Dal rather that blitzed smooth - very gingery taste to the dish. Sue had a Lamb shank with chickpeas that was sensational (according to her, not a lamb fan myself). Onion Bhaji and Samosa good, as well the chana aloo patties.

Breads were OK but nothing amazing... no chapatis on the menu though and I love a buttered chapati, me. Portion sizes were very good - enough for a tasty lunch today.

I can see this becoming our delivery takeaway of choice, but overall the Moghul still shades it for me.

That sounds bloody nice, Neil. I often think the Dhansak is the acid test of a curry house, and the lamb with chickpeas sounds like a winner too.

Due to lack of decent curry house in Gosport I am currently eating an oven pizza

Get out, Achari is hardly a big hitter in the curry stakes. Generally they just give you a bhuna and stir fry in a bit of lime (or mixed) pickle.

Got to agree with this...the Dhansak is the curry of kings. It should be (in my opinion) as hot as a madras but with a far greater depth of flavour.

I feel your pain brother...

Dunno about the 'acid test' thing, but I just love Dhansak... I do have occassional spins around a menu when something catches the eye or a hankering for Prawn Patia, CTM or Biryani strikes (or if I get a particular recommendation for a vinegary, but not too savage Vindaloo - not a regular occurance). However, when I'm really hungry, there's no sense in experimenting with something I might not end up enjoying - it's got to be the Chicken Dhansak.

I was, but it could have done with a little more heat to balance against the gingery sweetness.

I had some homemade Bindi with green chilli and yoghurt in the fridge which I also used up for with the leftovers for lunch - the extra chilli really did the trick.

There is a cracking curry house somewhere between Gosport & the outskirts of Southampton which we accidentally found when driving round desperate for FQM a couple of years ago. It was in a boring looking parade of shops with not much else around other than houses & bloody road systems. The ground floor is a take away but the upstairs goes over three or four shops.

Some really unusual dishes and they seemed to specialise in game. Twas excellent (Mrs_Blind is out at the mo but I will see if she can remember exactly where it was on her return.)

I'd appreciate that, Nigel... the Southampton side is well do-able for me as I lodge over that side in Stubbington anyway.

There is a bloody good Southern Indian on the east side of Southampton called The Kairali.

Veranda in Wickham is pretty good.

The Purbani in Hedge End / Botley is meant to be pretty wicked but I haven't been there (I wonder if that was the one you are talking about).

But Fareham and Gosport towns have 20+ curry houses and not a decent one in them all.

I had a Moghul last night.

A proper curry house for proper curry people.

I like the fact that they are traditional. For example you go and pick up your curry and you get a lager on the house. Like you used to get when you would borrow milk from a neighbour and be able to leave your front door open all day.

Have not tried the Moghul for years. I will give it a bash again especially as Justin says they give u a beer. That is always a nice touch and is why I use the Diwana in West Wickham a lot.
