5k in 26.20 last night. That's 2.5 minutes faster than my time last week. Very happy with that. Now I'll see if I can get under 43 mins for 8k on Saturday morning.

Started the training at a local park. Measured the distance around the edge (using the ruler on google earth), about 1.8kms in total with lots of up/down hill bits. Managed to do two laps last night in about 25mins. Not bad for a starter.

Really need to think about buying some suitable running shoesrather than the battered old pair of trainers I currently use. Any suggestions?

Going for three laps next time out.

Did my 8k this morning in just under 41 mins. That's 1 1/2 mins faster than I ever have before. To say I'm feeling pleased with myself is an understatement! I always get better times in the morning. Even if my head feels shit ny legs obviously don't.

It is well worth going to a specialist running shop if you can find one. You'll find they mostly sell Saucony, New Balance, Asics, Mizuno and possibly Reebok. These are all shoes properly designed for running, and will have different types for different running styles.

When I started running three years ago I used to wear some Addidas running shoes that I got from a non-specialist. They had a very uneven wear pattern on the sole and I got frequent knee pain. Then I went to Runners World in Beckenham and they took a quick look at how I ran, looked at my old shoes and pulled out a pair of Asics. I have had no knee pain since I had them, they fit like a glove and even though they are getting pretty old now, the wear on the sole is absolutely even all over.

Did 40.42 for 10k aged nearly 45. Not bad, but my father in law did the London marathon aged 69 in 3hrs 51mins!! Silly old fool.

If you are running regularly I would suggest a new pair every year, possibly more often if you are doing a lot of miles - however if you find a brand you like then stick with them as there is often very little change with each years model.

I'm on my third pair of Asics Gel Cumulus and last time I didn't even bother trying them on before buying as I knew they were right for me - will be on my fourth pair before the year is out.

My doc wants me to do a tread mill test in a couple of weeks, so last week I thought I would try and break out into a jog during my almost every evening 4 mile walk so I don’t embarrass myself.

I’ve tried to do this on and off, but I just can’t seem to keep going for more than a couple of hundred yards. I know that if I keep it up, those 100 yards hopefully will become half a mile etc, etc. One of my problems is I think I tend to go off too fast. I really struggle to just “jog.” Last year when I tried this, my knees and shins killed me for days/weeks after, so far this time I’ve had no reactions, so I’m taking that as a good sign.

At 52 I am also thinking there does become a point where it is pretty much not going to come back…. A point where your times just start getting slower and slower. I’ve always timed my walks, and I can just about keep to the same time as say 2 years ago, but I can see these times only getting slower.

I do have to tell myself though that I am so much fitter than I was 10 years ago at 42, when I smoked, and did no exercise at all. I feel so good, I’m tempted to make a footballing comeback!

As for the running shoe debate - The Marathon shop at the top of wellington st in covent garden is very good.

Just a short 4k sprint for me tonight. I really went for it and did it in 19min 20sec, about 50 sec faster than my previous best. I think that's the first time I've ever run anything in less than 5 mins per km.

I feel very positive when I run at the moment and I think that's helping my times

Done three runs so far this week. First one was the hardest section of Beachy Head Marathon from Litlington to Birling Gap. Took 58 mins to cover the 6 miles or so which included going up and over all Seven Sisters.

Thursday was a moderate paced run of about 45 mins while yesterday was a split session of 35 mins moderate pace with 10 mins fast (5K race pace) tacked onto the end - was certainly hurting at the end of that.

Back in the pool in the morning to keep the swimming topped up and then later on this week I will be trying out the new turbo trainer which will help me get the bike miles in throughout the winter.

Hey there KW.. I did the Hampton Court run yesterday too!! I've never run 10k before so was a bit nervous... I regularly run 3 or 5k before work on a treadmill but this was a new experience. I found the terrain quite rough at times especially at the start/finish straight where there were a lot of horse hoof imprints in the soft mud.. anyway managed it in 1hour 7 mins and 50 secs so quite pleased with that.

Don't know about your knees - sounds like you should see the doc or a sports physio at least.

Fully kitted out now and just started training.

What would be a reasonable time for a first 10Km road run, c40year of age (male)?

yes your right, terrain was ropey at start/finish line i went over a tad on my ankle at the start but wore off.

on the grass was good on one hand as would have been easier on your knees, but worse for your hamstrings.

got the Beaulie one this sunday which is the same - i.e on the grass/gravel track around the beaulie estate.
well done though. got anymore planned?

Just seen this thread...

Just decided to try and add some distance (for me at least!) running into my get fit campaign. Did 3 x 5ks over the last 8 days... down to 26.5 mins. Am now aiming for sub 25! Then sub 20... then take over the world... ok maybe not - but sub 25 seems very do-able

Hi Spoons, I was 40 in feb and spurred on to start running by my wife. Have to say I feel so much better, not just physically but mentally and emotionally too.

I would definitely recommend a slow start... running 10k straight off would put you off for life. There are plenty of websites to help out. Try this:
