Gets an unfair press from Palace fans, because Ron shipped him in when he first took over. Was disliked from day one and never had a chance to manage us as he would have liked. People forget that we were all but bankrupt in early 1981.

Is an outstanding coach and so what that he has stayed at Crewe all these years. He has kept them afloat and punching above their weight.

I am certain a large percentage of Palace fans would love to see us play the sort of football Crewe play and teach the same ethic from U9's upwards.

Dario is one of the nice guys in football and should have been involved far more in the effort to restructure the way the game is coached in this country, the same also can be said of Steve Coppell .

I think any problem he has currently is more to do with the chairman, than the club or its fans. To be fair to him he always understood why we did not take to him in 81. After all he replaced BIg Mal and was appointed by Ron, a heavy cross to carry!

In football terms a choice between Colin and Dario? Dario every time if you want to see football rather than hoofball.

I remember reading an interview with Jim Cannon where Jim stated that when Gradi took over in 1980/81 we still had a good chance of avoiding relegation but all Gradi wanted to do was prepare for life in the old second division so it's not only the fans that had a problem.

Gradi does seem a complete tosser. He was happy to take our money for Thomas and Pemberton when Crewe were propping up the league year after year. Only when they had relative financial security did he start getting choosy about whom he sells his players to.

Taking Your Club Forward
Mediawatch has to admit to something of a liking for perma-tanned Crystal Palace owner and serial gobs**te Simon Jordan.

However, we had to sit up and take notice when he had a bit of a pop at Dario Gradi this morning. From Sky Sports News:

"Look at Dario Gradi at Crewe, yes they have produced some good players but they have been up and down the league."

Up and down the league they may have been Mr Jordan, but let us have a look at some stats.

Crewe's league position upon appointing Dario Gradi - 23rd in Division Four.
Crewe's position when Gradi retired - 13th in Division Three (ie League One).
An improvement of 34 league places.

Crystal Palace's league position when Mr Jordan took over in 2000 - 15th in Division One (The Championship).
Crystal Palace's current position - 23rd in The Championship.

In his time at Palace Jordan has seen off ten managers, and in that time Palace have gone up and down then down some more, so perhaps you should maybe give continuity a try, eh Simon?

Doesn't mention promotion to the Premiership then? Nor the fact that two managers walked out on us. Nor has Jordan been in charge at Palace as long as Gradi was manager at Crewe. 34 league places in over 25 years is hardly an immense achievement.

Jordan's the plank out of the two, of that there is no doubt.

Apart from the Brighton name a manager who has done more damage and performed worse than Gradi for us. Please support any admissions with evidence supporting this claim.

Absolutely bang on.

I note ROB, correctly points out a % of the transfer fee goes to Gradi, no wonder he's stayed there for such a long time.

Couldn't understand Palace Radio fawning all over him last time Crewe played in Selhurst. I remember being far from impressed by him as manager. He came on to PR but I don't remember him saying a kind word about us. Those two guys who present the Palace Radio Your Call programme just couldn't praise him enough. I don't long for the return of Dario Gradi, the downsizer.

That is not quite right. Unbelieveable thought it might seem now, I was told by someone extremely close to th FA selection process that Gradi was at one point considered by some as a future England manager.

This was in the days when the FA wanted their managers to be well dressed, English lickspittles. And at that time Gradi had developed a reputation for loyalty (tick), speaking well at press conferences (tick), bringing on good young English players (tick) and - unbelievably - had developed a reputation as a 'thinker'.

I kid you not.

Although I've not seen that interview it is the case that when Gradi took over (February of that year) we were a few points (maybe 5 or 6) from safety. But he, Gradi, seemed to throw the towel in immediately he arrived and Noades gave me the impression that he had done the same.

As I've said before, it struck me as a disgraceful act of cowardice. That is why I regard Gradi as worse than useless

He didnt tell Ashton to join Norwich and not us, its a myth, Ashton talked about it in an interview at a later date, Norwich agreed a orice while we were still messing around, by the time we agreed a fee he had already spoken to Norwich and agreed to join them.

Maestro, that's how I heard it, but don't let the truth hide a good story. PK, the article also does not point out that Gradi got Crewe from the equivalent of League 2 to the CCC, as good as or better than anything Palace managed.
Totally unnecessary remark by SJ as per usual.

Faffing about with transfers was the signature of the Dowie era, so this rings very true.
