Using a Portable External Hard Drive
I got one yesterday (120GB), which came loaded with some synchronizing software.
At first I tried to load my whole hard drive on to it, which it did, but a) took a very long time, and b) seemed to make the drive very unreliable. I wiped the drive clean, and followed the set up/install process this time, and only set it up to back up all “My Documents” i.e. files/music/photos. The unit seems to be working great now, and literally only takes second to scan the files and sync with my internal hard drive, and vise versa, i.e. change a file on the external drive, and then sync with the internal hard drive (good for doing stuff on other computers like at work/hotels etc). I’m really impressed with how it is working now, but in the back of my mind, I’m thinking I should be backing up my whole computer, including all the programmes and Windows stuff. I have most of the disks still, and could probably restore everything. My question is, what do other people do? Is the intension of these drives just to back up document files/music/photos, or are they for complete computer restore purposes? I appreciate I can also save/transfer to it without using the synchronizing software, and have actually done that as well as there is so much room.

First question - why did you get one so tiny?

You should never boot off an external drive - USB2 is faaaar to slow to run an OS from.

Don't some people recommend that you keep your operating system and programs on one drive (internal) and your documents and files on a second (internal/external) to improve overall performance and access times?
I could be talking twaddle, perhaps Ricky ITB can advise as I'm soon to upgrade my PC and was planning on getting an external hard drive

I've done something similar- I've got all my music etc. on my external H/D (250GB) and I've virtually only got windows on my internal drive- only problem is that it's a laptop, so it may harm the performance cos of that (although I could be talking utter rubbish).
Alas, I've not run the startup cleaner thingy to make it boot quicker, as soon as I do that, I should be away. Does anyone know if running games is affected in any way running off of an external drive or of the internal drive? I wouldn't have thought so, but there might be something about running fewer processes on the boot drive or something that reduces load times. Again, I suspect I'm talking rubbish, but it's good to check.

Music, Photos and Video, you'll never need to get off at fast speeds by the very nature of them.
Installed programs and OS's shuld never be run from an external drive. |

I think I've figured out the best way now.
I have not bothered to copy all the Windows files as I have them on the O/S disc. The only programs I have copied are ones that I do not have disk for (i.e. downloaded - and even they are just links I think). The only thing I'm "syncing" is My Documents, My Favourites and my e-mails now. It's now super quick checking for changes in files, and if my computer goes tits up, I have the programs in a seperate folder on the external drive that I don't have disk for. I just needed to talk it out loud I guess.

Incidentally, as I was backing up the whole hard drive Saturday, I was watching the files go by, and it is amazing how much “crap” is on there. I don’t (or I’m sure anyone) knows what the hell half of it is.
Who knows what is junk and what is good stuff. I would never delete any of it for that very reason.

Whats the best sync software that people use? I generally copy manually but if theres a decent recommended sync solution I'll take a look

I'm not sure I would recommend the one that came with my Western Digital drive yet. I don't recall what it was called... I'll look when I get home. It seemed a bit non user friendly from what I've seen so far, and I was getting pretty frustrated with it on Saturday.

My PC is starting to play up, and so am thinking of getting one of these now. My PC only has 80GB memory so I suppose I don't need a bigger one than that. any suggestions what I should get?

Is there any software that allows you to add a password? So you plug the drive In, It asks for a password then away you go. Cheers.

I am also looking to get one, and would like it to have a firewire port and USB2 if possible (Firewire for me, USB2 if I need to hook it up to anyone elses).
Around 500GB would be good. |

The one I have (Western Digital Passport) asks for a password if you use their software and sync feature, but not if you just save stuff to the drive. I should just add that I did end up saving all my program files to this in hte end, and have to say it was the best thing I every did. I've had to use it a couple of times to restore after some problems, and it saved a hell of a lot of hassle.
