What an embarrassment to football. Isn't he still the highest goalscorer for the Dutch natonal team? I've always rated Claude Puel as a good coach, but what was he thinking when he took Kluivert? A bit of desparation surely, he didn't/doesn't have anyone at the club capable of scoring. If you look at the league table, Lille have only lost five (or maybe six) games like Lyon but they're the draw specialists and can't transform them into victories.

Lyon have loaned out 21 year-old U21 international Loic Remy to Lens until the end of the season with the option of buying him (between 8 and 10 million Euros). They've loaned out Sandy Paillot (20 years of age) to FC Grenoble to get used to being kicked about more than he does with the stiffs. Shame about Remy. He looked promising but he's well down the pecking order now with wide men Govou, Ben Arfa, Keita and new man, Argentinian Caesar Delgado, and even Benzema who can play wide.

Perrin feels he still a bit tender, hence the loan move. Of course Lyon have bought Jean Alain Boumsong who I don't rate at all, but his experience will probably come in handy against Man Ure. Pity Cris won't be fully fit. He could have sorted Rooney out. Not so sure anyone anywhere can deal with Ronaldo at the moment though.

Not a big fan. I think he's underachieved slightly. Wide man, fast but 14 goals in 150 or so league matches ... With 78 minutes to go until midnight, are you secretly hoping NW will surprise us all? I take it, you're a fan of his ...

What are attendances like in France? Imagine PSG, Lyon and Marseilles to be pretty big. The rest?

I get the impression they are more into their rugby.

Would like to see Paris SG go down this year. Have a friend who supports them...

Cisse reveals England offers
Player close to return
By Patrick Haond Last updated: 1st February 2008

Cisse: Tempted by England

Marseille striker Djibril Cisse has revealed he nearly quit France to return to England during the January transfer window.

Former Liverpool player Cisse attracted the attention of Manchester City and Blackburn last month.

Whilst being tempted to make a return to the Premier League after enduring a poor start to his Ligue 1 season with L'OM, the France international believes it is in his best interests to remain in Marseille ahead of this summer's Euro 2008 tournament.

Objective

"The fans booing? I have turned the page, but I won't forget. I had a lot of scores to settle," Cisse said.

"I was close to leaving but it has finally calmed down. Mainly it was Manchester City that were interested but Blackburn were also attracted.

"Above all there was an objective that made me stay in France and which is close to my heart. If I want to play in Euro 2008 it was better for me to stay at L'OM.

"Moreover I didn't want to leave Marseille as a failure. Physically I feel much better, I have almost never felt so well, even during my time at Auxerre. I am not far off being my best."

Possibility

Cisse, however, has not ruled out a return to England in the future.

"I will probably move back to the Premier League, because of football and part of my family lives there and I also because I like the way of life. If I have to leave OM it will be for England," he said.

As a competition, it can throw up some real giant killing. Like so much else about french football, it is wildly unpredictable. Some might say that applies to the French as well....

For obscure reasons, I have a soft spot for Angers, so it is nice to see them hosting Nice at the weekend. It should be a nice payday for Croix de Savoie. Bordeaux v Le Mans could be tricky. Le Mans have played above themselves again this season, but they are a solid team and quite good going forward. They've got a great little Japanese guy there called Matsui who always catches my eye when I see them. Then again, that might just be because you don't see that many Japanese players around...

Marseille v Monaco is the other glamour tie. Gotta fancy Marseillw for it, I guess, but Piquionne can turn games if he's in the mood.

Another great player who hasn't delivered the goods. Spotted in the Lyon region at the age of 11 and joined Olympique Lyonnais. Built up a most promising reputation in the junior and reserve team ranks. Made a number of appearances for the first team but couldn't nail down a place due to other more experienced players keeping him out. There were some flashes of brilliance. I think he even nearly signed for A.C.Milan at one point. He's been at Toulouse for two years now and can't even get into their team. What's going on? He did play 20 odd times for the Under 21's (which I think was a record at the time) scoring ten times. He turned 25 in January. Time's running out. Come on, Elie Baup! Bergougnoux and Elmander looks so good on paper. In any case I doubt Elmander will be at Toulouse next season.

Winning the World Cup in 1998 certainly brought some fervour to French league football 'l'effet Coupe du Monde' as they called it. The average French football fan cannot rival any of his European counterparts. There are a few exceptions, of course. At Marseille there's a pretty good atmosphere except when things are going badly, in which case they can quickly turn against their team. Paris St Germain is pretty much the same. The atmosphere has got better over the years at Lyon, but that's not surprising. They are still a bit jealous of those two clubs in that they haven't yet gained popularity throughout France. They need a big victory in Europe, pourquoi pas contre Man Utd. St. Etienne still have a good following, nostalgic of some great matches in Europe in the 70's.
As for support away from home, apart from the aforementioned clubs there is next to no following. In many a match, you can literally count the away fans in their enclosure. Unthinkable in England.

As a competition, it can throw up some real giant killing. Like so much else about french football, it is wildly unpredictable. Some might say that applies to the French as well....
.

Cup fever hasn't hit France. They seem to talk more about the F.A.Cup than their own Coupe de France. I agree, there are some real potential banana skins in this round, with some teams you couldn't find on a map having the match of a lifetime and there they playing in front of 1,000 or 2,000 spectators! Take Lyon's second team La Duchère. In recent times, they've performed a few giant-killing acts. I'm not exactly sure but their ground, if you can call it that, holds about 3,000 people. I think they've got one stand. You'd imagine they'd have the match switched to Lyon's ground and all the Lyon fans would pile down to support them like we did for Wimbledon against Leeds all those years ago. Lyon rent their stadium out and with policing and all other overheads, if La Duchere don't get more than, say 25,000 people (which they wouldn't), they'd be out of pocket. So they'll probably be playing in front of 500 fans in their own ground. I'll never understand. Ah la magie de la Coupe!

I've never worked out why Lens have such a large and, by all accounts, completely nutty following. Have I missed something? They are probably the closest club to Calais, so the most viable option for anyone wanting to watch french football live to go to.
