Classical Music
I am beginning to realise that i must be slowly turning into my father and it seems that i am now beginning to really get into this kind of music although there seems to be lots of different styles etc. I am now finding myself tuning in to Classical FM instead of Radio 2 on the way to work.
Some of the tunes i am currently into Beethoven - Moonlight Sonata Vivaldi - Four Seasons (Spring) Bach - Air on a G String (Hamlet ad) Bach - Toccatta and Fugue in D Minor Brittain - Guide to the orchestra Anyone else got any favourites? |

You need to get some Beethoven symphonies under your belt. Numbers 6,7 and 9 are particularly pleasing.

Away from the standard Classic FM fare (not that there's anything wrong with it):
Schubert string quintet in C: just beautiful, from here go to the Beethoven late quartets. John Adams: Nixon in China (opera-beware!) - intense, exciting with incredible orchestration. Try 'Short ride in a fast machine' for an intro to Adams. Rautavaara: Cantus Arcticus - modern-sounding, with recordings of real birdsong playing alongside the orchestra, but very beautiful, eerie and chilled.

What do you base that statement on? He did die in 1883 y'know, 50 years before the Nazis came to power. And yes, I know his work was admired by Hitler, but he was hardly in a position to have any control over that was he?

Guitar - try concerto d'aranjuez
Organ - Saint-Saens number 3. Turn up the volume and destroy a few neighbours houses. |

That's what i love about some pieces of classical music - you can turn them up and just sounds even better! Whilst we are on the subject. My mother was asking do they still hold open air concerts at Crystal Palace Park? |

Try some Shostakovich - symphonies 7, 8, 9, 10, 11...and piano concertos 1 & 2 - very powerful and moving. I also love choral music - Bach's B minor mass, Brahm's German Requiem are two of my favourites. Something about the human voice really does it for me. ![]() |

Bach's Concerto No. 5 in F Minor for Harpsichord is a personal favourite. In fact Bach has lots of hidden gems, his output was just astonishing and its well worth delving into some of his less heard archives.

Welcome to a wonderful new world of beautiful music. Try some Mozart - late symphonies or piano concerti - or basically anything that takes your fancy. Radio 3 is also worth a listen, and not nearly as fusty as it used to be - they even play some jazz. It's the beauty and wonder of the music that counts, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Perhaps our parents' taste wasn't so bad after all? |
