Good sat navs
I know there has been some chat on this in the past, but as technology moves so quickly, and I can't search 'sat nav', does anyone have any advice on a decent, reasonably priced one. Nothing too fancy. Any views on the Tom Tom?
Thanks.

I've got a Sony one, works for me although our road isn't on it (despite being the most recent maps, but it is only a cul-de-sac off a road) so it can take a little while to kick in as it gets confused with where it is.

Had so much trouble with the Tom Tom 710 so I changed it for the Garmin 660.
Preferred the 710, but the 660 has never let me down. Excellent traffic reporting and auto routes if any problems on the road ahead! |

i have a basic tom tom. Excellent. also used it to travel to italy and needed to download the map to a chip first. It worked superbly. I can't get over how good they are epsecially when I look back at my honeymoon years and years ago it took me hours to find a small place in Spain despite having arrived in the location fairly quickly.

Thanks guys. I was kind of half convinced to get a Tom Tom anyway, so despite one bad report and also having this thread lobbed into C&G
that's probably what I'll get.

Am looking for a basic one for the other half - all it needs to do is allow for non-motorway routes to be specified. Any ideas?

TomTom does this. Once you have planned a route, it will ask you for: Fastest Route Shortest Route Avoid Motorways Cycle Route This is not set by default, you have to go into the preferences and change this setting to display when you are planning a route.

Has anybody tried out Vodafone's Sat Nav? I'm using the free trial at the moment and I must say...I'm very impressed. It's normally £5 a month and that's including traffic updates.

I have just purchased a tomtom One XL Europe thingy.
How long is the battery supposed to last and how long is it supposed to take to charge up? As it seems to last about 30 seconds and take years to charge

Um, you are really supposed to keep it plugged in as you drive

As i live in central london i don't have a car and hire them when i need one. Going to do a bit of driving in Europe so got one for that - was charging it through the USB connector to the laptop.

That will always take longer than car or socket
