Somewhere on this site is a photo of Grimsby playing at Selhurst in our away kit because they turned up with their black & white stripes and the ref said it clashed with our kit.

Mansfield wore yellow shirts with blue shorts that season so there's no reason why we would have needed to change either our home or away kit in the first place. I suspect that we turned up with that season's usual away kit of red & blue stripes with blue shorts (the previous season's home kit) and some jobsworth referee ruled that both sides couldn't wear the same coloured shorts. I remember us wearing red/blue striped shirts with white shorts for a couple of matches at White Hart Lane against Spurs for the same reason and I thought it looked pretty damn good; a colour photo of it was used as the cover of several programmes for the 78/79 season.
Presumably the kit change at Mansfield was done for the same reason; it's virtually impossible to tell from those photos whether they're striped or plain. My bet is that they're our red/blue stripes with white shorts. It's hard to imagine what else it could be or why. |

Yes, red & blue stripes with white shorts at Mansfield. As you rightly say, because Mansfield wore blue shorts. The shades of the red & blue stripes used in those early striped kits would appear as mid-grey when using black and white film under most lighting conditions, making the stripes indistinguishable. |

Definitely Red & Blue stripes in the picture at the start of this thread.
At the start of the following (1977/78) season, Palace had to wear Sheff Utd's all yellow (with black 'chevrons') away kit at Bramall Lane - Palace actually had an all yellow away kit (with black shoulder stripes) - but could'nt have taken it! ![]() Palace did have red away shirts under the infamous Alan Mullery. Not many good pictures of it - but here is a bit of a classic at Brighton in Easter 1984. Andy McCulloch in action here against Seaweeds Danny Wilson and a young Ninja - Eric Young! ![]() Here's a pic that will upset quite a few people! - ![]() It's two days after that away trip to Brighton in 1984 - Palace at home to Charlton. Charlton are wearing Palace's all light blue (with scarlet sash) kit from 80-82!.
