Whatever happened to the Supporters Club and the Sportsman's Club?
I've been reading through a 1962 programme that a friend kindly bought me, and was intruiged by the influence the Supporters Club had at the time. This was when the programme had only about a dozen pages and was about 3 inches square, but the Supporters Club had a page of its own. Some of the content brought a smile to my face.
"Don't forget your counterfoils for the Double Top Draw are due by 24th November. Many members seem to be confusing this draw with the Sportsman's Club Draw. Will you kindly note that the Double Top Draw will be drawn on 1st December AND DOES NOT COMMIT YOU TO 1/- PER WEEK. We hope you will support the Sportsman's Club draw also but please do not confuse the two." Was there rivalry between the two clubs? It also goes on to encourage people to buy tickets for the Grand Christmas Dance "Tickets 6/- each. Make sure of your tickets early, the rush is on" to be held at Streatham Baths. Hopefully, no-one got too wet.On a subsequent page of the programme there is a small section just for the Sportsman's Club where it says that "Results may be seen daily in the Daily Sketch." Results of what? It doesn't make clear. Does anyone know what results used to appear daily? I have a very vague recollection of the Supporters Club having an office somewhere in the ground, but can't recall exactly what they did. Arrange away travel? I have no recollection of the Sportsman's Club. So, can anyone tell me. What did the Supporters Club and Sportsman's Club do, and when and why did they die? |

Why can't we re-invent the Supporter's Club, perhaps base it in the Red & Blue Bar, organise social nights, the travel club, charity events, quiz nights. I am sure we had a Supporter's Club house in the car park (you had to show a membership card to get in), but was there another supporter's club on the corner of Whitehorse Lane and Clifton Road, now an engineering company?

Technically, the Official Crystal Palace Supporters Club still exists. It is headed up by Chris Plummer, who posts on here sometimes, and gets to represent supporters at Sag (Safety advisory group) along with PISA. Occasionally, the Advertiser asks him for a quote if there is a major Palace news story. They still do rail travel to some away games, although how official their use of the old away portacabin is, I don't know. Pre-Jordan, they were very much responsible for the week-to-week running of Crystals, the organising of the coaches and trains for away games, the end of season disco, and organising the election of player of the year. Many fans will remember they ran an exclusive special train too the Play Off Final in Cardiff too. Plus they used to sell diaries at Xmas! Gradually, SJ has eroded quite a bit of their role - Crystals isn't used on a matchday any more, the club organise the voting for POTY in conjuction with the Croydon Ad, and put it on on a grand scale in the Marquee. Rail travel is one of the few remaining remnants of the organisation, and is pretty much for those regulars in the know / in contact with the organisers only. With the internet, many fans can get bargain fares without an organiser needing to do a group booking. Maybe over time though, a supporters group may be given a bigger role to play at CPFC again, especially if the club comes under new ownership.

As I recall, the supporters club existed until the early 1970s when upon appointment of the club's first commercial manager the format and powers of the supporters club were restructured and was renamed as the Social Section.
My recollection is that as the commercial manager, presumably, had targets to reach and bonuses to be gained. As such, it was deemed unworkable that a separate body (the supporters club) should also be fundraising. Hence, the Supporters Club building in what is now Sainsbury's car park was renamed as the Social Club. The Social Club still had a committee to input to social events etc but it no longer had the independent powers of the former Supporters Club. Believe it or not, it was Ron Noades who reintroduced the supporters club, at least in name. In reality, though, it had no more powers than the Social Section it replaced, in fact many would say less. |

I asked on here once if there used to be a pub on the corner of WHL and Clifton road. Remember in the 60's a crowd of Birmingham City fans hanging outside what I thought was a pub. So it was actually a supporters club.

It would be nice if the club were to do a serious of articles for the matchday programme on the lost buildings at selhurst , and how the ground has changed over the years .
It involves too much hard work and research so they wont bother |

I don't think any of the CPFC staff have the knowledge or expertise to write such articles. And to be honest, I think there are far more pressing matters that they should be spending their time on. If it is the sort of thing you'd like to see, and are prepared to do the research/write the articles yourself, I'm sure at some point the club could consider giving them some space in a publication. Failing that, drop a line to Ian King (prob the best qualified on the subject), Alan Russell or even Alex Warner and see if they might be able to do something on the subject in the future. I wrote to Alex Warner a year or so ago asking if he could include an article on Big Mal to coincide with Fedora day, and he obliged, so if you don't ask, you don't get. I've got stacks of info and pictures on all Palace's grounds inside old programmes and yearbooks, been meaning to do something like this for years, not sure there is much interest in it, as it is a bit too niche, but if there is something in particular you're interested in, let me know and I'll see what I can dig out when I get time.

loads of clubs have behind the scenes articles all we seem to do is report on the same past match encounters and the same other boring things week after week , yes its niche but its different . I have some pictures but dont have the geographical knowledge of inside the stands such as locations of old dressing rooms , old player tunnel from inside the stand , bars etc. A couple of articles on what was there before and whats there now with photos . ....And I thought you was going mad John when you asked about this place. It must have been just before my time because when I first came to Palace we walked along Thornton Heath High Street up Whitehorse Lane and I can't remember there being a pub/club there, this would be late 68. As for the social club, me and a few mates used to go along on a Wednesday night to play cards, darts, table tennis etc. and have a glass of cola as we were still at school. I remember it was quite well attended and people used to come along and buy tickets for the away travel. I was also a founder member of the "Rail travellers club" which ran specials to most away fixtures even though I travelled mostly by coach.

So, can anyone tell me what happened to the Sportsman's Club? In fact, what was it?

The Supporters Club building used to be directly behind the Old Stand. A lot of people used to go in there after games to pick up the other results - they had a tv in there. I remember going in there after a home Friday night game in the 70's when we had drawn 1-1. About 10.30, Malcolm Allison came in, got up on the stage, took the mike and apologised for the team's performance. He then got a big bundle of notes out of his sheepskin coat pocket and asked the bar staff how much it would cost to buy everyone in there a drink. One of them shouted about £100, so he put a pile of cash behind the bar and then left.
