Latest young Palace star is a surprise
AT THE start of this season when the fixtures were announced, we did a little graphic in our paper to go with them which included a player to watch at Palace.
Without any hesitation I plumped for Victor Moses. There was just no doubt in my mind that he would be a key man for the Eagles, just like he was in the final months of the last campaign. But Victor has only shown flashes of the brilliance we know that he possesses and the youngster who has shone instead this season is Nathanial Clyne. The right-back has taken his chance when Danny Butterfield was ruled out through injury and not looked back. He plays with such composure that he looks like he has been a fixture of the team for years, not a matter of weeks. Neil Warnock is delighted with the job that Clyne is doing. When the press popped down to the training ground this week to speak to the boss ahead of the trip to his former club Sheffield United on Saturday, his eyes lit up when he spoke about the latest academy product to be promoted to the first-team. “I’m looking forward to him playing at Bramall Lane and I never thought I would think about Nathanial playing at Bramall Lane with everyone else fit,” he said. “As a full-back you don’t need to impress anybody - you just have to be a good defender and he’s got all the ticks in the right boxes to be a top defender. When I saw him in two reserve games I told Mick Jones ‘he’ll be in my team in the next two months’. His size might put some people off but it hasn’t really bothered me. He’s not let me down.” It looks as he has got that right-back starting berth unless his performances dip, something which does happen with prospects. Both Victor and Sean Scannell both made a major impact when they first broke through but have, at different times, seen their performances dip. While Sean’s form has picked up again, Victor is still waiting for his season to ignite. But he is too good a player for it not to. And I’ve just got a feeling that he will come good when it really matters for the Eagles. http://www.southlondon-today.co.uk/t...id=362&bid=323

I've got a feeling Warnock is going to unleash Moses pretty soon and he's going to be a major part of our promotion push. Young players often suffer dips in form and burn outs - would make sense that Warnock is saving him for when it matters. As for Clyne - never heard of him before he played but what a player. Butts has been washed up for a long time now and we needed to replace. Seems we dont anymore |

The more I see Clyne, albeit on TV only, the more he reminds me of Kenny Sansom. The stature, the mannerisms, the way he looks unflappable.
I only hope he turns out half as good as Kenny, and we will be on a winner.

Exciting a prospect though Clyne is, we have talked up youngsters in the past then got on their back when they've inevitably hit the wall. At some point NC will lose form - we need to stay behind him when this happens so he can come right again.
I think vic mo has hit that wall at present and will step back up soon enough, if the moaners can stop bitching about his "effort in training" - as if they know.

I realise that what I am about to say does not tick all the boxes for many Palace fans, but if we can stay afloat and in contention in the CCC then I would be satisfied for us to be a club that is a conveyor belt for exciting new talent. Sadly the English game has become so skewed that this is harder to do without the extra cash from playing in the Prem and that then mitigates against clubs that have academies as their mainstay. Actually it's more than sad, it's shocking. Still, in the meantime here's to Nat, Vic, Sean and the rest. Long may you prosper.

The demands placed upon a right back are probably less than a striker, though; Moses being touted as he has been as our saviour and cert to hit 20 goals this season, can't have helped him. I have faith that Clyne is only going to get better, the more he plays. |

I still see it as Warnock not wanting to play them both at the same time, and then have them burn out. If he waits for one to have a dip in form, he can rest one and play the other. I agree with you that, particularly over the busy Xmas period, we will rotate a fair bit, and Victor will be unleashed.

You're not wrong. I still stand by my comment, though. Youngsters need to be nurtured rather more than old pros.

Good that he's come in and made the RB spot his own for the moment. Provides a fair bit of attacking verve from there at times as well, much as Lee hills did when he got into the team last season. Let's hope he can keep his form up, because he certainly has the ability. Which is one of the most pleasing things about the academy products, they all have good ability.

For his age Cline is the best fullback[excluding loans] that I have seen at this club since Kenny Sansom. Indeed he reminds me more of Sansom than Cole because of the way he goes past players by dropping a shoulder, using his low centre of gravity something that Kenny did brilliantly. Cole tended to use his natural pace more to go past players. Cline also has a similar height and build to Kenny. However, at the moment he doesn't match either in his defensive ability. This is what makes both Cole and Sansom stand out as two of England's best ever defenders. In fact Cole's anticipation especially when the keeper was beaten is the best I have ever seen. Kenny was just virtually impossible to get past, beacause he was rarely flat footed and always on his toes.

I agree, what an amazing prospect for us.
Because he is a defender I think it is gonna be harder for him to dip in form than the likes of Moses and Scannell. On the official website he says he is a left-back so that shows his versatility.... I am hoping at least a £10 million pound player in a few years . . . !
