I am guessing with it being so close to 'FA Cup 3rd round' Saturday they didnt really want to pack it in.
They could have done a game on NYE though and not on the 28th/29th, like a few years ago when we played Watford away.

Modern professional footballers struggle to ply their trade on a regular basis, and need all the rest they can get. The proximity of Saturday's cup games will be used as an excuse, but since most clubs treat this like the FA Youth Cup it doesn't cut any ice with me.
There is, though, a full programme of non-league games for your enjoyment. |

This is the reason why there is no New Years Day game..which is ridiculous considering teams played on a Friday and Sunday last week. Really pissed off that there's no New Year day fixtures this year.

As a general rule, if New Years Day falls on a Thursday or a Friday then there won't be any matches because it's too close to the FA Cup 3rd round on the following Saturday.
Also, if New Years Day falls on a Sunday, then there will usually be games on New Years Eve (Saturday) and on 2nd Jan (Bank Holiday Monday), but not on New Years Day itself. This happened in, for example, 2005/06 and 1994/95. Other gaps in the historical list can be explained by postponements for bad weather, and occasional variations in fixture policy. We had home games against Norwich on New Years Day 2007 and 2008, which are not shown in the list above. |

Was at the Den in 94, think this was just before the Bentt-Hide fight..
Played really well first half & they turned us over in the second, only really blot on a great season.. Our tormenter that day was Etienne Verveer..

Pedantic **** alert!!
85/86 Brighton (a) L 0-2 The second being one of the worst penalty decisions ever when Terry Connor flung himself to the ground in the box like he had been hit with an anti tank shell. 76/77 Reading. This got a bit lively after some Saints fans turned up after their game was postponed.Too near the cup sf defeat to be friendly. Also, NYD has only been a Bank Hol. in England since 1974.

Just the way the dates fell. We could argue about why they no longer 'fix' the fixtures to ensure London derbies and why kick-offs have to be at 13:00 instead of 15:00 etc.

As others have said, it depends on which day of the week Januuary 1st actually falls. Also, New Year's Day was not made a public holiday in England until 1974, so for many older supporters New Year's Day football is a relatively "recent" introduction. ![]() |

Oh God I remember that one. I've never felt so ill in my life. Maybe cleaning up vomit from thousands of punters who'd drunk too much the night before and still felt rough was proving too expensive.

There would have been one against Reading at SP on 1st January 1997 but it was called off because of a frozen pitch despite the club using industrial heaters to try and get the match played.
