Deserved or Deservid
Is football the only time we pronounce the word "deserved" as "deservid"?
I keep noticing commentators using it and it's really annoying me ![]() "A deservid win for Hamburg..."

Yes, you might be right. No, it doesn't really bother me.

I can't think another instance outside football where you'd use the phrase 'good feet for a big man'.

Well then you should know! Or is that the English teacher in me? I don't, however, wish to go on pedant alert but in the meantime there is also ''beloved'', ''rugged'', ''learned'', ''blessed'' and ''naked'' which follow the same pattern. |

Yes Kabbot but generally, 'deserved' isn't pronounced 'deservid'
You wouldn't say: "He deservid it" - would you? ![]()

Quite right. You don't say, ''He deservid it,'' because ''deserved'', in this case, is a verb. It's only when the past participle of a verb is used as an adjective that you can pronounce the ''-ed'' ''ID''. Watch: The triumphant warriors learned that victory could be sweet on such a blessed afternoon. The learned gentleman was in fact a bishop blessed them before they took the field. |

Rugged doesn't follow that pattern though as it isn't a verb. It's always 'ruggid' unless you're talking about a syrup-wearer, in which case 'berugged' is a much nicer adjective

This is true, but if you apply pronunciation rules rugged should/could (?) be pronounced ''rugged''. For example, if you have rugs fitted in your home, is your home not rugged out (pronounced ''rugged'' and not ''ruggid'')? I think what I was trying to prove was that if it's a verb, it's pronounced ''-D'' and not ''-ID'', otherwise it can be pronounced ''-ID'' whether it's a verb or not. Having re-read what I've just typed, I'm not sure if I've been that clear. I think I'm b*ggered (pronounced ''b*ggered'' and not ''b*ggerid'')! |
