Only just very recently got into country and western. I've missed out a lot.
Really liking Lady Antebellum, Dixie Chicks, Rascal Flatts and of course The Eagles (they have huge country influences in their music). I prefer the band sort of stuff with the big choruses, which is just like any pop music really...

As already mentioned, Hayseed Dixie are good fun
and very good musicians. Little feat are well worth listening to if you like country with a boogie beat, and the allman brothers have to be included in any country thread (Ramblin man, blue sky, etc). But if you want something abit more up to date, chck out "The Infamous Strindusters"they aint half bad, and make no mistake.

I mentioned on another thread how good the new Brad Paisley CD but Elwood's post reminded me of how skilled Hayseed Dixie are too.
I went to see them in Bridport this year and got drinking with them in the bar afterwards and they are a really nice bunch of guys - the lead singer and the bass player especially so. The lead singer bloke spent about 10 minutes discussing Italian red wine with a mate of mine from Naples and apparently he really knows his stuff which doesnt really fit with the hillbilly image !

Hank III is playing a gig at The Electric Ballroom nest week, Wed's 20th June. He is Hank Williams Grandson, I saw him play in London about three years ago and when he is doing country stuff he looks and sounds very much like his grandfather. However if you go along expecting a alt-country HW tribute act you will be disappointed, when I saw him he did three separate sets, the first was country, the second was described as hellbilly (think country-metal crossover, the final set was much more hard core.
He certainly seems to have his fingers in several genres and has a prrolific output. Last year he brought out three albums "Ghost to a Ghost/Gutter Town", which is experimental country with a big ladle of zydeco stirred in, "Cattle Callin" which is more like hard core metal with a hint of country and "Attention Deficit Domination" which again is more of a modern metal style. This year has only seen one release which is a more traditional country album called "Long Gone Daddy", which has a few covers of more traditional country tracks. Not all his output is my cup of tea but the gig should have a bit of something for most country fans, and one can retire to the bar while he plays sets of music which may not be to your taste.
