'Painted Children' registered charity - dodgy or not?
I just passed a smiling young woman collecting outside a Tesco for 'Painted Children', a registered charity. Something about her raised questions in my mind, so I looked up the website ...

If they have a registered charity number they will have had to demonstrate they meet certain criteria so probably not that dodgy.

Seems their objectives are admirable - helping disabled children in the third world.

There must be a list of registered charities somewhere.

Charities commission website.

But if it is possible they are dodgy, then I'd send an email to Charities commission who will investigate.

nonetheless, it takes a ****load of work to get registered, and they go over the applications very rigourously.

So that fact that it is new shouldn't be a worrying a factor.

Yes, it's Stratford, what will happen in a lot of charities is that the collectors get 30% of collections, another 20-30% will go for directors salaries/admin and the rest goes to the charity. This doesn't always just happen in small charities, childline for example were one of the worst with over 70% of collections going to admin.

It is a pain getting registered with the Charity Commission but it's not so hard as to stop dodgy charities and unfortunately there are still plenty of exceedingly dodgy charities around...

Although is there any evidence that they're actually dodgy in any way? Chances are that the person collecting the money was probably just a minimum wage Chugger (Charity Muggers) who doesn't have any relation to the actual charity themselves other than reading a standard blurb on the morning.

Of course there is the argument that any charity which employs "Chuggers" is inherently a little bit sinister but please lets not judge charities on the quality of the people collecting for them and instead judge them on the work that they do direct with their client group.
