Pro Cycling Thread

Haven't had much cycling news for a while.
I've just been watching an incredible stage up and down hills and along mud-tracks in cold driving rain.
Great entertainment. Evans won the stage and since winning the world championships, he seems to have changed into a more attacking rider.

originally wrote a post about Millar and Vino and had a bit of a rant.

But that said doping doesn't give you the balls required (maybe even the opposite ) to get through a stage like that.

Fair play to anyone who got through that yesterday. And I will give credit to Vino for slowing up the break after Nibali crashed.

I agree although he didn't actually try to stop the others from accelerating.
I'm not really a fan of his after his denials of doping, and there is still a lot of suspicion around him after coming back and doing well after two years out.

I’ve always liked Millar despite his well publicised failings and frailties - he was always going to struggle on Sunday, he always does in the mountains; disappointed for him that he and his Garmin team mates weren’t able to deliver the performance needed to get him into the maglia rosa after the TTT.

Doesn't get on too well with the Giro does he? Had a bad crash there last year but as its his shoulder ought to still be able to keep his fitness going and be OK for the TDF

Excellent day from Bradley Wiggins in the saddle yesterday – another equally good day in the mountains could even see him pushing for a podium place, although I suspect the gap may be too much for him. Particularly pleased to see it was at the expense of Vino
And on a separate note Landis finally admits to being a drug cheat To view the link you have to Register or Login - Floyd you never fooled me on the Col de la Colombiere & the Col de Joux-Plane in 2006.

Yes it'll be interesting to see Bradley's form over the weekend - I see it's mountains on Sat & Sun followed by individual time trial on Monday Tuesday. I think Sastre is having a go at this one this year. I actually thought Wiggins should have targeted this and the Vuelta this year rather than the Tour, especially seeing as Schleck, Contador, Armstrong & others aren't here.

Agree about Landis.

As some of you have already said, yesterday's stage was crazy. I watched the Eurosport coverage all afternoon (I don't work on Wednesday afternoons this year). About 60 odd riders headed off in a breakaway including Sastre and Wiggins. Vino and Evans's teams have already been weakened and they were incapable of reeling them back in a long, cold, wet and hilly stage in spite of the fact that other teams ordered riders who were in the breakaway to stop and wait for the second (leader's) group to haul in the first group, but it was all to no avail. Sastre is back in it and I would say is probably the favourite now, Brad is also well placed, but I don't think he'll go for it since he is preparing for Le Tour de France. This has been one hell of a Giro so far, the best Tour for a long time, and there's still a lot more to come with one or two brutal mountainous stages to come. Further details then.

This is how they finished yesterday, Stage 11:

1 E.PETROV (KAT) 6h28'29"

Guess I'll start watching as they approach Monte Grappa. Perhaps I'll get a bottle of grappa in to enhance the experience!

If you hit the grappa tomorrow, God knows what you'll be needing on Sunday. They climb the Zoncolan (sp?) on Sunday, one of the hardest climbs in Europe which the big Tours can use. I'll post a profile of that climb later or tomorrow. It' s brutal. More fireworks, methinks.
