The Euros need 24 teams.
There are at least 24 teams who expect to be in the finals England, Ireland, France, Germany, Holland, Belgium, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia, Poland, Czech rep, Romania, Turkey, Switzerland, Russia, Greece, Bulgaria, Ukraine. |

The article mentions a 51 match final competition. I am assuming the format will therefore be 6 groups of 4, with the top two from each group plus the 4 best third placed teams qualifying for the knockout stages.
This is a format that proved to be rubbish when used in the World Cup. With three teams going through from most groups, teams tended to adopt very defensive tactics, knowing that 4 points would probably be enough in the group stages. This mindset often carried through to the later rounds, leading to lots of stale draws and penalty shoot-outs (with 1990's tournament being probably the low-point). The 2008 finals were great, with loads of fantastic games and attacking football. It therefore seems a real shame to dilute the competition when it was arguably at the "top of its game". |

It does not. 24 teams means that only 1/3 of the teams get kicked out at the 1st stage, which is too few. How do you define "teams who expect to be in the final"? It is a completely subjective list. Do you think all those teams would go into the tournament hoping to win it? |

Crap idea. One of the great things about the Euro Championships was that with only 16 teams making it, most games were worth watching. Having looked at all the first round matches in the world cup, the only games that grab me at the moment (apart from those involving Spain) are Nigeria v Argentina, Portugal v Brazil, Brazil v Ivory Coast and Portugal v Ivory Coast.
It should be going the other way in my opinion. With only 8 teams in it, every game is meaningful. Instead we are going to get to enjoy the 'spectacle' of Belgium grinding out a draw with Slovenia in order to get through their group in third place. All in the name of big TV audiences and the resulting ad revenue.

More games is always good. Whack it up to 32 would be even better.

Euro champs should go back to 8 teams IMO.

could have increased numbers to 20 - four groups of five nations with top two going through to the last 8 and every team guaranteed at least four games.

also - increasing numbers to 24 limits the number of countries capable of staging the event.

So who's coming over then? We'll have to get a few 'chambres d'hôte' sorted out over here. England in the semis at Lyon's new stadium ...
