MLS 2010

FC Dallas fan here. I say fan, I'm more of a following having not been out to Dallas. But my interest is all things Dallas when it comes to following US sports and football is no different. Couldn't see another thread on this so thought I'd start one up .. I think the MLS has had the hype, now they need to build on it with some quality ... I think it will get there ...

Of course, I still keep an eye CPFC Baltimore

The league is getting better. I recently went to the Red Bulls NY Challenge and The Red Bulls were damn good. Yes, they had Henry up front who was flicking the ball everywhere and directing traffic, but his strike partner Kandji, the midfielders Richards and Tschani were very good and the goalie was solid. All in all had a good time and was impressed by the footie. Will be attending another game soon.

Tempted as I am to get interested in the MLS, whenever I watch it I find myself frustrated at the awful commentary and the poor (albeit improving) quality of football.

I just don't think MLS games have the kind of intensity of the sport anywhere else in the World. Put it this way, I watch an MLS game and find myself reaching for the remote - I don't get that feeling watching any other league.

My side would be Chivas USA (having seen them play once) but I'll probably make my way over to San Jose to see the mighty Earthquakes (without Darren Huckerby) play.

I get that feeling watching Mexican games on TV though--aside from matches between Chivas and Club America. I agree with you about MLS--it feels very much like college--but that could well be true of a number of other leagues around the world too. Interesting what booklynlou has to say about the standard of play; at times watching Chivas (USA) I think they play some very nice stuff--better than Palace, to be honest. As you point out it's the intensity that's missing, but that might be the fault of the Home Depot Center.

Certainly the addition of Thierry will once again hype the league once again but I do question the format route they have gone down. Kind of like other US sports but don't think it really works for football ... don't know what anyone elses thoughts are? As for watching, you don't get the coverage in the UK so I haven't experienced reaching for the remote situation yet .. have been watching highlights online though ...

Agree. None of the teams play hoofball and all of them try to play a passing game and try to work the transitions - ie they play football. This is a big change from 6 or 7 years ago when I tried watching MLS and couldn't. It was like watching palace under Taylor - you just wanted to walk away or hit something.

There is no doubt that the big cities can support one good team, and certain 2nd level cities like Columbus. LA has 2 because of the Mexican influence, hence the creation of Chivas USA.

Trouble is the cost of playing each other must be very high (and prohibative)... look at CPFC Baltimore's road trips they have had - there just is not the money being generated in the sport to support this. This also precludes away fans, other than transplanted folks (Go to a Dodger or Angel game when they play New York or Boston and their fans will out number the home fans).

I fear until a kid plays AYSO, than High School, then for his college, then drafted into the local pro team where his friends and relatives will support him through that whole process, the sport is always going to be viewed as a game full of "foreigners".

I have been to see Toronto FC play, I was VERY impressed.

It was a bog standard league match with a sell out 23K in attandance. The fans create a cracking atmoshphere that would put most English clubs to shame (not quite up to Palace's standards of course).

There was constant singing from 2 sections of the ground, with the occasional song going round the whole place. A few witty terrace banter songs ta-boot.

They have sold out of season tickets for the past couple of seasons.

Same with Seattle. Seattle has been around for 2 years now and they sell out all their games ~26000. They had a midweek Concacaf Cup game against some lowly Central American team (Metapan) and they got their lowest attendance ever - 17000. For a crap cup game.

The salary cap system has been tweaked over the years and seems to be working. Each club can bring in 3 top salary players (Beckaham, Henry, etc) and if they exceed the salary cap they have to pay a luxury tax back to the other teams in the leagues - so no "Cosmos Effect" like in the early 80's where you had 1 team packing 80000 people into Meadowlands arena and the rest were barely getting 10k to show up.

As for the singing, I was amused how they handle it in MLS. Typical American attempt at creating efficiencies. The team designates a 'Standing and Singing' section where you can stand, sing, and wave your banners around. Its even marked on the stadium seating chart. They even provide a toll free support number in case you are confused

Quote:
Sections 101, 102, 103, 132, and 133 are designated Red Bulls supporters' sections. Fans who sit in these sections typically stand, sing, chant, and enthusiastically and loudly support the Red Bulls throughout the game. Please contact a Red Bulls representative at 877.RBSOCCER (TTY - 201.520.0223) if you are considering sitting in or near these sections.

1-1 draw for FC Dallas last night which extends the unbeaten run to 8 games. Stay in 3rd place in the West.

Good to see Greg Berhalter still going strong ...

Red Bulls come away from Houston with a 2-2 draw. Watched the game. Henry and Angel were brilliant, but the defense and the ref were a bit dodgy.

Real Madrid are in LA this week and play the Galaxy next weekend at the Rose Bowl. I think I am going.

The MLS is certainly improving, but gradually.

The game tonight is Los Angeles Galaxy - Chicago Fire SC.

For our UK based friends, the Sounders traded Freddy Ljungberg of Arsenal fame to Chicago for a draft pick. That's something that you won't read on your footie pages. A player doing f**k all and earning a high salary is not sold, but simply given away to any team that wants him simply to clear the salary from the books.

Interesting that one Lou, thanks for that ... massive NFL fan here so understand how it works. Sounds bizarre from a UK football (I will not say the 's' word!) point of view considering what we are used to ...

MLS 2010

Can you believe 9 goals in front of 66,000. The MLS execs couldnt have dreamt that any better. Every element for success was realized. Beckham/Galaxy playing in New york, the biggest media market in our country. Then you get 66,000 seats filled. Beckham has two assists a goal would have been great. Then three of New Yorks stars score goals Mathis, Angel, Altidore. On top of that, goals were scored all the way up to the end of the game. Ridiculous.
