Bicycle polo at Selhurst Park

Qualifies for about 3 forums, but I chose this one because the content is old.

Did anyone see The One Show last night? They had a bit on Bicycle polo making a comeback. Apparently, it was popular many, many years ago and they showed a clip of Bike Polo being played at Selhurst Park. The picture quality was really good and there was some great views of the old AW terrace, Holmesdale etc..

I have searched Youtube, but can't find anything anywhere.

There you have it.

Bicycle polo was a regular feature at Palace games in the post war period,I recall Norwood Paragon as one of the teams.

The old stand looks packed. And some great views of the standing areas around the ground. Brings back memories of my early days at the Palace standing on the terrace where the AW is now.

I'm sure I remember Bicycle Polo pitches at Purley Way back in the late 50s and 60s

Norwood Paragon contested the English Championship Final at SP in August 1946.

Bicycle Polo was popular at SP for a couple of years or so starting in the summer of 1946. It seems that six London football clubs (Palace, Tottenham, Arsenal, Chelsea, Charlton and Brentford) contested their own summer League (see attached).

There was also an international between England & France.

Newspaper report says that there were around 6,000 at Selhurst Park including many American troops to celebrate American Independence Day.
A United States Army team beat the Canadian Army 19-17 in a match in aid of war charities.

Despite high nets placed at the back of the 'plate' a lady spectator was struck in the face!

There was continual commentary to explain the game which also included a report sent back to America while many photographs of the proceedings were taken.

A friend informed me that Bicycle Polo was played from Sep 1945 till July 1949. In was an idea by then Chairman Percy Harper. Concern was about the state of the pitch after the games, although most were played in the summer, and that it did not seem to bring any money in.

How things have changed I used to watch hairy legged blokes riding around on bikes and progress evolved into Len Chattertons Flatterer to Palace Dollies and the Crystals what next?

ps I know I should have worked Mullery into the above!

Is it the Robin Jackman Surrey XI v The Rest of the World on Friday 1st May 1981? It was part of Jackman's benefit year.
I have the programme.

Bloody 1936 and the Old Stand roof is unmistakable to what it is today!!

Is there any ground in the Premier League that still even has remnants of bits of stand from the 30's? Be hard pressed to find one in the top 4 divisions actually ...
