It always amused me that in our school reception there was a photo of him as an example of a famous ex-pupil. Not sure he was really an ideal role model!

You remember it too!!!

I always thought Richard Shaw was tough, perhaps more in a gritty way than a hard man.

He was both. But he was also a very good player, but the old red mist would come down and he'd lose it especially when he was at QPR. I think he played less than 10 games for us, and his most memorable moment was him getting involved in a mass handbags incident against spurs.

I'd have John Burridge in goal. Not a hardman as such, but a complete loon. He'd probably do stuff like try and break a plank of wood covered in glass with his forehead. Good to send out ahead of the troops to skirmish on some sort of suicide mission to run out their ammo and confuse them.

Hughesie is the stand out from recent vintage for me. From older times, Droy and Gilbert as others have mentioned. I can't think of anyone who would fancy their chances against Droy in a straight fist-figt - possibly Marvelous Marvin Hagler but that's it.

I also recall the Dennis incident v Spurs very fondly, Gazzamania was building to a crescendo at the time and he was winding the home fans up with his usual 'crazy' antics and imbecilic tackling. Dennis was having none of it.

I always think of hard men as players who can take it as well as dish it out. So I wouldn't class the likes of Bryan Robson as hard - 'ref, ref, he's kicked me!! Aren't you gonna give us a free kick?' 'Sorry Bryan, you're quite right, free kick to United and a caution for you Mr McGoldrick you dirty bastard'
