I must say though, your long passed shit hole the Goldstone was difficult to get a decent view from the away section. Turn up too late, and due to the traditional immense following of travelling Palace support, you were either stuck behind a pylon or behind the enormous fence erected by the clearly scared for their lives Brighton fans.

The Pylon was so you didn't have to witness your team being battered. The fence was to keep the North stand out and you alive. I'm not a violent person, but I did once see a Palace fan crazy enough to be on the wrong side of that fence, in the North stand when we played you, and remember him cheering when you attacked during the first half. What a complete nutter, he disappeared into the throng that looked like frenzied piranhas at feeding time and was kindly escorted out 5 minutes later by the St Johns Ambulence laying horizontly, in a various shades of red.Not that I doubt the same fate would metered to anyone starting Albion songs in the "scared" Holmesdale end on derby day?

I have no idea what relevance that picture has to the always packed corner of Brighton's dilapidated stadium whenever Palace visited.

My abiding memory of the Goldstone Ground is Palace losing 3-1. The year was 1988. The Palace hoolies were not happy and promptly ran around 100/150 Brighton fans down the road as everyone was leaving the ground. I was walking in the opposite direction and all I could hear was a loud chant of: "EAGLES! EAGLES! EAGLES!". I've never seen opposition fans move so fast to get away. |

I can honestly say that i never witnessed a Ruck in 70/80s either at brighton or Palace/Croydon in which Brighton came-out on top. Even on the Trains down to Brighton their fans got chased off the trains and stations. I think every yob living in south london used to make the trip down there. I had friends who only ever went to Palace v brighton games. Mad Mad days Last edited by racehorse-80s : 18-11-2010 at 04:47 PM. |

Elland Road,Leeds.
Good photo of the away end,the very first time i went there in about 1981 or 82 we were neck and neck with Leeds near the top of the old Division 2 and both going for promotion.. We filled the Away terracing and behind us up in the old seating saw the first organised trip by our Casual supporters, the BS. Final score was 2-2.I can't for the life of me remember if we did achieve promotion or not that year,i'll have to look it up, I think it was the first and last time i travelled to Elland Road by train, all other visits have been by car as the Away fans were moved first into the corner, then forced to use the seats provided. Great days and proper atmospheres. |

Maybe as you come on the trains together in a big group and you pour out the game in one big mass and are marched to the station by the old bill, (safety in numbers). But in the town centre? and around hove station?, you're not being serious. I am not into that side of it all, but I remember well one evening you beat us at the Goldstone in what was then called the Simod cup, as I walked by the east terrace with friends (Goldstone away fans in north east corner), i witnessed 3 brighton fellas literally flatten about 6 -8 palace blokes. The horendous 5 nil day at Selhurst day, I came on the train with the wife, and both normal fans/lads and a large contingent of hoolies were all held in a station near the ground and not allowed out. As we came out the Old bill on horses were trying to keep the 1500 or so Brighton in one mass with Police Surrounding. Of course their were a few hundred Palace lads/hoolies in groups over the road gesturing with their best "hand relief" techniques, and throwing stuff. A large mass of Albion lads broke through the police line and I promise you the once brave Palace lads looked very much like they were members of the local Athletics club as the sea of Albion fans ran toward them. Most legged it, a crazy and outnumbered Palace few didnt and it kicked off for a few minutes as the Old Bill poured in again with their fancy truncheons trying to regain control. I was watching from about 50 metres away. I heard that on that day, the Albion Hoolies (who come out from Moulsecoombe - voted britains 6th worst no go area a few years back- and Whitewark, on special occasions such as this) also overan and smashed up one of your main pubs. Now thats not something to brag about to all you 'ard nuts who fink palace wun every time', we can well do without violence, but as for nutters we certainly have a large contingent. Very large against southern/london clubs and especially Palace. The first time I took my youngest brother to watch Albion was away at Aldershot in FA cup, it was one of a rare few occasions I went on the supporters coach. He was a little apprehensive, i told him it would be fine. On driving through Aldershot, we literally witnessed a mini war zone. the coach stopped at traffic lights and we saw 2 blokes throw a bench through a pub window and there were pockets of fighting kicking off all around. One bloke went flying into the flowers and newspaper stand outside a Londis. The night England were knocked out of Italia 90, there were riots and looting in Brighton. These are not the sort of blokes that run.

Racehorse,
I agree,a photo of the big old side terrace at Charlton would be interesting to see, first visit there we were put on the side terrace in a poorly fenced off enclosure in the bottom right corner. Me and a friend hid our scarves and just walked out, along the massive side and round to the back of the small Charlton end by then with scarves back on,luckyly for us the police spotted us and took us back up to our enclosure. We lost the game but i remember Charlton had Flannigan and Derek Hales up front. For the next visit there the Away fans were behind the goal and in seats. |
