The crossbar story gets a 'no' from me as well. On the basis of this survey 0% of fans who were at the game recall the incident so I think we can safely say it didn't happen.
I remember during his time at Palace hearing the tale of how his long-suffering wife had to lob oranges at him randomly during the course of the evening while she was sat in front of the telly trying to watch Coronation Street. He always reminded me a bit of Sid James for some reason. May not have been the best but certainly better than Paul 'butterfingers' Barron? |

I've read that story too, Im sure Stan Ternant mentions it in his autobiography. And he missed a game after copping one in the eye. It was during his spell at QPR though. |

It's not the only thing he got wrong is it? He described the 4-1 win over Ipswich as the "first game of the season".

It wasn't even the first home game. It was special, because the win resulted in Palace going top of the (old) First Division for the first time. First and only time, ever. Got overtaken when Liverpool played later or the next day didn't we?

The following Season, we finished bottom with just 25 points, and Ipswich finished second. |

Don't think so, everyone played on at Saturday at 3pm in those days. |

IIRC we lost the top spot after drawing 1-1 at home to Spurs the following Saturday.

In the copy of the book I have it quite clearly says the game took place in September, which is correct.

Well the 80-81 season wasn't quite as bad as I remember it then, I thought we only got 19!!!. Only 2 for a win in those days though |

You're right. We did only get 19 points that season, thanks in part to an epic away record of 3 draws and 18 defeats from 21 matches. Derby matched it in 2007/08 but from less games; I doubt whether any team has achieved worse. It took until mid October for us to amass more than 2 points hence the joke "what's the difference between Crystal Palace and a triangle?" (a triangle's got 3 points) |

Mad as a box of frogs.
But one the best pros ever to play the game. And way ahead of his time. And immensely entertaining. And a superb goalkeeper, by any standards. |

Which was on Match of the Day. ![]() If only there had been just one little cine camera at the Ipswich game to see that Swindlehurst volley and Cannon's mad rush from one end of the pitch to the other for the other volley. Strange how nobody has ever seen that goal again since that day yet I still remember the build up, the goal and the celebration of Jimbo lying on his back vividly. 31.5 years ago!! |

His warm ups were worth the admission. If it weren't for football he could have been a great street entertainer
