Leon McKenzie to join Peterborough
This story has just appereared on Ceefax.
Crystal Palace striker Leon McKenzie is on the verge of completing a transfer to Division Two side Peterborough. McKenzie, who became a crowd favourite during 2 loan spells at London Road back in 1998-99 is to undergo a medical with Posh on Thursday. McKenzie, 22, scored 9 goals during 15 games for Peterborough during his first loan spell in 1998. After picking up an injury he returned to Palace before coming back to Peterborough for another loan. So it seems many of Palace fans dreams have happened and McKenzie is leaving. I personally will be very disappointed because he gave his all when he played and he loves the club as he has been there all his life and i'm sure this may well unsettle Clinton more aswell. Sorry to see you go Leon and the best of luck. |

Leon had his chances. Yeah, I agree he gave his all (etc etc) but it's all been a bit of a struggle for him, particularly since Svensson left. However, this does mean we HAVE to get a new striker!

If he scored 9 goals in 15 appearances for Peterborough, then it's clear he is better off playing for them than he is staying with us.
What the f*ck happened in Spain? Linighan sacked, Fullarton listed, Andy Morrison signed on loan, two promising youth players going out on loan and McKenzie sold? In the words of Harrison Ford: "I have a bad feeling about this..." |

Leon is off then - well i won't be shedding any tears. he tried hard and for that i respect him, but frankly i don't think he was ever up to the job as a striker - putting himself about and getting booked were his strengths. Unfortunately putting the ball in the net whilst wearing a palace shirt was not...suggest he'd make a good full back.....adios leon.....

Maybe this is wheedling out the dead wood. If it is I'm quite surprised at the people going.

McKenzie was a tough little trier. I felt that he should have been the 1st choice striker with Morrison or Forsell supporting him this season. A long run in the 1st team would have seen his confidence and performance levels improve.
I bet he scores a stack of goals for P'boro and gets himself a big money move in the next 18 months. |

Well, Gazza1, I am sure that the chairman would have had the sense to insist on a handsome sell-on fee... (doh!)

"Maybe this is wheedling out the dead wood"
Hope we got enough wood left to light a fire!!! ![]() PS - Anyone remember the bloke in the old stand late 60's "Set them alight Palace" was the cry. Let's hope so! |

Leon has been a hero who has contributed a lot. His work rate the last two years has been fantastic and he's not a bad player but if we want to improve this team we need to admit that players like Leon and Deano are simply not good enough.
- i think it's time for him to move on with all of our best wishes for his future. - I just hope we get demand a reasonable fee for him rather than give him away |

If he does then I'll run round Selhurst naked. A tryer but very limited ability. |

Any mention of a fee. We were offered £375,000 for Leon when we REALLY needed the money so anything less would be bad business.
On the basis we once paid £2M for Emblen then I think a fee of £3.5M would be about right!!! |

You can bet your life this will happen - almost every striker who leaves Palace can score goals for any other club. [This message has been edited by Welling Eagle (edited 11 October 2000).] |

So do we know how much Leon has been sold for as yet??? Every report I have seen has given not reference to one. I'm guessing we've let him go for peanuts then!
I wish Leon all the best at Peterborough, and bet that he comes back to haunt us someday. He's only 22, and many Palace fans forget that fact when they say he is talentless. He has been a victim of the youth players that Palace have been forced to use in recent years. Yes, some of them have developed beyond their years (ie. Mullins and Morrison), but I think Leon needed more time and more confidence via the reserves, as opposed to being thrown in at the deep end. I still say that with the right coaching and technique, Leon could have done extremely well for us. Let's see... [This message has been edited by Snorwood Eagle (edited 13 October 2000).] |
