Multi-Sport Events (Triathlon, Duathlon etc)

So I cleaned up the Galaxy today. I don't want to go nuts but the tyres are about as old as the bike so they need replacing anyway. What would be a sensible proportionate choice given that this is my one and only bike.

The current tyres are marked 27 x 1 1/4. Is it worth going to 1 1/8??

Really thinking of economical here.

Also have a broken pedal. To be honest it doesn't bother me but I glimpsed an ad for dual function pedals - flat one side, cleats the other - and wondered when I should start thinking shoes etc

I'm afraid a whole bike is extremely unlikely, Spunky both for financial and logistical reasons (I live in Gloucestershire). Thanks for the offer though.

Anyone else heading to Hyde Park this weekend? I might try to watch the men's race and register whilst I'm there - got my first tri of the season in the Sunday Olympic.

High hopes for the bike leg, average run but just to get through the swim. It's too early in the season to have got enough open water practice in. I want to break 2hrs30 either this weekend or at Windsor two weeks later...

I'm doing the Sprint distance on Sunday.

Will be my 4th time at that distance but I have done zero preparation. Just need to get out of the water and then it will be ok from there!

Really pleased with today - a PB in each discipline. Admittedly the bike was only 36.5km, rather than 40km, but add on the 3.5km and I would have been faster than my usual over that distance.

2:27:00 in total, with a 30:41 swim, 1:04:10 bike and 44:04 run.

The transitions were horrific - over 5 minutes for T1 - but the swim to bike transition included a 400m run in a wetsuit, so I'll blame that. T2 a more respectable 2:40, but it's still a huge in and out.

I think there's scope for sub-2:20 but maybe not this year. I reckon I'd need to take 5 minutes off the swim and shave what I can off the bike/run.

Next stop, Windsor on the 15th.

I was a marshal in the transition area at Hyde Park today, quite a few people were unhappy with the length of the run to T1 after the swim. Also some confusion as to where the timing mats were.
Overall I thought the event went really well.
Well done for completing it, let alone in a PB.

Takes some going to beat the T1 at IM wales. Over a km in distance and the first half of that is up a cliff face. Olympic distance pansies

Bump.

Is anyone out there doing the JLL Property Triathlon at Dorney Lake tomorrow? I'm sure that there are a few property professionals out there on these boards...

It's my first sprint triathlon and i'm shitting bricks! Not completely sure that i'm ready for it but hey ho, I just want to finish. Not too fussed about my time although Im hoping for around 1:35 - 1:40.

You'll be fine!

The set up at Dorney is great and you won'twaste too much time in transition. Watch out for the headwind on the way back round on the bike laps, negates the pancake flat course!

Studenteagle how did you find Windsor in comparison to your others I am trying to gauge in a wider context what the times mean as it was my first triathlon.

Managed 2.45.06 (35 swim / 1.10bike / 53 run) so was pretty chuffed - had a nightmare swim as got trapped on the turning buoy. Got the London and Gower triathlons left this year.

The swim confused me the most as I was faster than my friends in training and serpentine but they both took >5 minutes out of me on the swim although I got them both on the bike. Would be intrigued to know if with the current downstream made for a quick swim or whether the long drag upstream made it slower than a typical tri swim? The strength of the current was a massive surprise.

Well, I finished in 1hr.44 on what was the hottest day of the year so far.

Totally messed up my swim as I had never attempted an open water swim before. It was completely different kettle of fish. Plus I bought the cheapest shortie wetsuit off the internet i could find. It was a pretty tight fit but i thought it would be ok. (I'm 15 1/2 stone) As soon as i started the swim i realised that it was far too tight an i couldnt take a full breath in so within 100 meters i was at the point of hyperventalating. I had to stop mid swim and undo it which felt better but as the back was open it was acting like a parachute in the water. Not good and at points in the swim i felt like i was being dragged backwards. I was one of the last out of the water after having to stop and mess about.

1st Transition was slow as i'd alreay felt that i had blown getting a half decent time.

Bike was fine and on my second lap i was told that i was catching up so i put a little more effort in. This slightly scuppered my run as my thighs were on fire.

All in all, a brilliant day and a learning curve for the next Triathlon.

Watching the two triathlons today has me itching to give triathlons a go for the first time in 2015. Must start with a more beginner's level. Running should be fine as I'm doing a marathon in September. Swimming I used to be strong at will just take training. Which leaves the bike...

Just seen this, sorry! There was a really strong current at Windsor this year which made for a very tough and slow swim. The section with the current is very fast but it's also a shorter distance than the section against the current.

The transitions are big too so whilst you have a fast bike and run course there are much faster triathlons than Windsor - in my view of course!

Incidentally, watching some of the triathletes from the minor commonwealth nations today makes me think any number of amateurs could compete with the right passport! Certainly I'd fancy my chances against the Kenyan who got lapped doing breaststroke on the swim...
