100 Greatest World Cup moments
A great 3 hours of entertainment - some classic moments I'd almost forgotten.
But .... couldn't help feeling disappointed at the end, that the No1 was Maradona's goal vs England in Mexico '86 (Hand of God was also in the top 10). Couldn't Channel 4 have "sorted it" so at least there was a more possitive No1 from the English point of view. Or maybe it was a fair and just deserving No1 - was a first class goal (made Peter Reid look like he was in slowmo). I'm in two minds. Any views?

i think that the idea was that the fans voted for it, so it would be unfair for c4 to fix it. i think it was the greatest moment, though i only watched the first 20 mins and the last 20 mins, so i dunno what was in the middle. though 100 seems excessive, as numbers 100 - 85 (maybe mor, i didnt see) were pointless

I don't think it was right that they had qualifying matches in the list, they only did it so that they could include the 5-1 result.
I think it would have perhaps been better if they had done something like the top twenty world cup games, rather than the hundred greatest moments as a few seemed to be repetitive.

i watched it in my drunken state, was not impressed with the number one, but since it's voted for by 'us, the channel 4 viewers' i suppose it's the fault of those who voted!

The football stuff was great. I taped it. Sometimes it needed a touch more explanation on some of the clips. Perhaps if they had removed all of the usual celebrity w@nkers from the show they would have fleshed the programme out lovely.
Still the guests they had knew and remembered so much about World Cup football going back to at least 1966 even though some of them were younger than me. They were amazing they knew the full details of facts we football fans would have to debate for ten minutes on here to get correct. At the end I wanted to smash their fed answers and comments into their smug faces. It was like watching an episode of an Audience with, perhaps the worst and most cringeworthy show ever on TV. The Brazilian goal (number 40 something) from far out on the right that banana'd inside the post was the best shot I have ever seen.

I didn't think they were, I was well entertained throughout the programme by all the clips (yeah, the celebs did get bloody annoying after a while though).

I have not seen it yet but the voting is inevitably subjective and like all popular polls, is bound to concentrate on local issues.
Whilst not alive at the time, I would have to put the whole 1970 tournament as the best- there are loads of top moments in that. The best game I have ever watched was Brazil v France in 1986. |

Good point. That goal won Brazil 3rd place at Argentina'78 and yet gets very little coverage considering how amazing it was. Everyone bangs on about that plank Pele (cue hysterical reaction but I have an article lined up for next season in OMP showing what a plonker this guy is!!!!!) yet this goal is the best Brazil goal apart from the Carlos Alberto team goal in 1970.

I videoed and sort of watched it but had friends round so didn't fully take it in. Looked brilliant though. Things like the Diana Ross penalty miss were fun to have in there. Things like this should have an element of fun in them, hence the inclusion of some awful Wolrd Cup anthems as well.
Can't believe how Bryan Robson's 27 second goal v France wasn't in there though (unless I was out of the room when that came along.) Was Poland '73 in there? Thought that might have made it in. Bit too England-orientated at time but then that was inevitable.

Good light entertainment, but shouldn't be taken too seriously. My favourite moment was the bloke from Zaire running up and just booting the ball into Row Z when Brazil were lining up a free kick - absolute class
Anway, the thing with these 'Top 100' shows is that they're made by the same production company. What they do is get a 'celebrity' usually one from the C list, sit them down in a room, show them loads of clips about all sorts of stuff and then ask questions. So, just one days work for Lisa Rogers and all of a sudden she appears on every "I love 1970 to 1999, Football, Christmas, Easter, Pancake Day, Crap songs, Rock songs, Soap stars, adverts blah, blah, bah ad nauseum..." Also, the Top World Cup moments had already been selected by Channel 4 (as happened on the previous Top 100 Sporting Moments) so viewers could only choose from a prescribed list. And... I too think it ridiculous that England's 5-1 drubbing of Germany (brilliant though it was) was included. If qualifiers were allowed then England V Poland in 73 would have in the top 10, along with Beckham's free kick against Greece. |

Bryan Robsons goal was there.
Not sure about this voting lark though, although it doesn't really matter. Do 10,000 people vote their top ten moments or something. If so many would chose the same 25 moments between them. I would suggest a reasonable number of the '100 moments' were not voted by anyone. Am I being picky. ![]()

Which voting isn't subjective I thought it was a reasonably good program. Agree that the top 10 was a bit popular. Where was all the old footage? Matthews, Finney, Di Stefano, Puskas etc...???? The program was like it all started in 1962 |

Top moment in the programme was in Mexico 1986. Huge flag with CPFC on it and the words SOUTH CROYDON. Was that anyone on here?

It looked like a pre-presribed list. The same thing was one with the 100 greatest films. I mean, who in their right mind would have thought to vote for "crap German and Swedish theme songs" ahead of Terry Butcher's bleeding?

Good point. As amusing as it was to see them in there, who actually voted for them. What also bugs me is that I watch a fair bit of Channel 4 and never see the chance to vote being advertised. Did ANYONE on here vote? If so, what format was the voting?

I think you will find that virtually every phone vote or poll on TV is altered for various reasons.
